LONDONDERRY - Jake Holland had been waiting since the first kickoff of the season for a team to kick one to him again.

The Londonderry High School senior got his wish in the second quarter of Saturday's game against Windham.

With the Jaguars kicking off from their own 25 after a deadball personal foul call on a touchdown, Holland field the kick at his own 25, found a seam in the coverage and raced untouched for a 75-yard return for a touchdown.

Add that to a 25-yard return of a punt he blocked in the first quarter, plus an interception that clinched Londonderry's 35-23 win over Windham, and Holland had himself a pretty nice afternoon. The performance helped the Lancers (4-1) bounce back from last week's loss to Pinkerton and kept them even in the Division I South Conference standings with the Astros (4-1) and Salem (4-1).

"It felt great because last week, we just came out slow and didn’t feel like ourselves in the first quarter," Holland said. "We had to come out and play our game."

Holland's two special teams scores helped give Londonderry a 28-9 lead at halftime, and Jeff Wiedenfeld scored the second of his two touchdowns on the first possession of the third quarter to give the Lancers a commanding lead.

But Windham (2-3) was able to take advantage of a couple of short fields to score twice before the end of the third, and had two more opportunities in the fourth quarter, but Londonderry's defense was up to the task.

"Defensively, I thought we were awesome," Londonderry coach Jimmy Lauzon said. "We’re fortunate this year that that’s our strength, our anchor in the middle. We wanted to force them into passing. We had a feeling those formations would come about. Their quarterback (Cody Potter) extended a lot of plays. (Cody Stevens) for them is a player."

Londonderry held Windham's running game in check in the second half, as the Jaguars finished with 103 yards on the ground, but had minus-3 yards on 13 carries in the second half.

Potter was able to move the ball through the air, going 15 of 23 for 192 yards in the second half, and he finished the game 18 of 32 for 230 yards with a touchdown and an interception. Stevens caught eight of those passes for 96 yards and a score, while Tommy Emrick added 91 yards and a touchdown on the ground.

"We’re right there and we’re just making too many mistakes," Windham coach Bill Raycraft said. "That’s partially our youth and partially being in a division with good teams. You can’t spot Londonderry 14 points on special teams like we did in the first half. For us to come back in the second half, I’m really proud of our guys."

Wiedenfeld finished with 107 yards and two touchdowns rushing and Evan Cormier threw a 23-yard touchdown pass to Cole Keegan in the first half.

But Windham held the advantage on offense, outgaining the Lancers, 336-188\. The two big special teams plays proved to be the difference.

Londonderry forced a three-and-out on Windham's first possession, and with Stevens back to punt, Holland found his way through and threw his body in front of the kick.

"It was a safe call, which is usually when we don’t rush anyone except me and another guy," Holland said. "I just got through clean and got to him quick. I didn’t know at first, but then I found it quick and just scooped and scored. We practice it a lot. We’ve got great special teams coaches (in Sam Carey and Zach Zimba)."

Windham answered with a 26-yard field goal by Christopher Burke on its next possession, but a short kick gave the Lancers the ball back at their own 41\. A 37-yard run by Cormier set up an 8-yard touchdown run by Wiedenfeld and a 14-3 lead with 3:41 left in the quarter.

It looked like the Jaguars were going to go three-and-out on their first possession of the second quarter, but on fourth-and-5 at midfield, Stevens fielded a low snap and ran for a 21-yard gain and a first down.

Four plays later, Windham faced a fourth-and-16 at the Londonderry 35 and Emrick scampered for 17 yards and another new set of downs. Two plays later, Potter found Stevens in the end zone for a 23-yard touchdown pass, but the Jaguars were called for a personal foul after the play, pushing the kickoff back.

Holland made the penalty hurt moments later and Londonderry was rolling.

"There’s teams you can get away with mistakes and you’re fine," Raycraft said. "There’s teams that you can’t and they capitalize on those mistakes. That was evident (Saturday)."

Potter and Emrick each had a rushing touchdown in the third quarter, closing the gap to 12 points in the final seconds of the frame. But Windham turned the ball over on downs at the Londonderry 28-yard line on its next possession, and with under a minute to play, Holland picked off a Potter pass at the Lancers' 21 to put the game away.
