NASHUA - No matter the situation, the Spaulding High School girls volleyball team remained cool and collected Wednesday night against Bishop Guertin.

When the Cardinals would make a run, the Red Raiders had an answer, and when they didn't, Spaulding regrouped and bounced back.

After losing the second set to Bishop Guertin, the Red Raiders stormed to a win in the third and rallied for to take the fourth for a 3-1 win over the Cardinals in a Division I match. Game scores were 25-19, 21-25, 25-15 and 25-21.

The win was the second straight for Spaulding (9-4) after it had dropped two of three, and kept the Red Raiders in the hunt for a top-eight seed and the home playoff match that comes with it.

"The girls played extremely well throughout the match," Spaulding coach George Pendleton said. "They didn’t get down when we got behind and they played out of holes. They played hard when they needed to. We were much more able to finish (Wednesday). We did a better job continuing on."

Outside hitters April Beatty and Frances Callaghan led the way for the Red Raiders, as the pair continued to find the open spots on the floor to keep Bishop Guertin (6-7) off balance.

"We knew they had a really good block and a strong defense, so we were trying to work on getting to the spots they weren’t," Beatty said. "We were trying to play smarter rather than just try to hit it really hard. We were also working on our energy."

Setter Grace Beaulieu also had a big night for Spaulding.

"We were just making sure we’re keeping the ball steady," Pendleton said. "The setter (Grace Beaulieu) did a great job getting the ball to different people and in the spots that she needed to. When she could get it to them, she put it in front of them."

Bishop Guertin got 13 kills, six aces and 19 digs from Libby Knapp while Madison Keating added 10 kills, two aces and 12 digs. Kristen Coumas had 31 assists and Emma Charron had 17 digs while Lydia Litvak had three blocks and five kills.

"We’ve been focusing more this year on cohesiveness as a unit, and I think (Wednesday), we did a little bit better with that," Bishop Guertin coach Abby Savard said. "There’s a lot of unforced errors and we need to do a little bit better at that, at keeping the ball in play in situations."

Those mistakes caught up to the Cardinals in Game 1, as Spaulding turned an 11-10 lead into an 18-14 advantage before Bishop Guertin took a timeout. The Red Raiders extended that lead to 23-16 before taking a six-point win, but the Cardinals bounced right back in Game 2.

With Coumas serving, Bishop Guertin got out to a 4-0 lead and eventually went ahead 12-4\. But Spaulding started to chip away, with Beaulieu and Leah Hobbs both going on service runs to tie the match at 19.

The Cardinals came right back, winning five straight points with Knapp serving, to take a 24-19 lead and finished out the win on a kill by Keating.

But that momentum didn't last long, as the teams went back and forth to open the third set before Spaulding went on a 7-0 run to take a 13-8 lead. Bishop Guertin closed the gap to three at 15-12, but the Red Raiders won 10 of the final 13 points to take a 2-1 lead.

"They weren’t really letting anything drop on their side and we had to hustle a lot," Beatty said. "When we started turning things around, it was because we were able to put things where they weren’t. We started to play scrappy."

The teams again went back and forth in Game 4 before Spaulding turned an 11-11 game into a 18-15 advantage. The Cardinals and Red Raiders alternated every point the rest of the way until it was 24-21 and Spaulding took the win on a Bishop Guertin error, on of five during that stretch for the Cardinals.

"Momentum is everything," Savard said. "That’s a big part of this. If we get the ball back and make an unforced error, its really hard to play catchup when you don’t have the momentum in your favor. When you don’t have that and keep making errors, it’s difficult."

Both teams return to the court on Friday, as Bishop Guertin heads to Pinkerton and Spaulding hosts Merrimack.
