There should be plenty of smash-mouth high school football in Goffstown on Saturday.

Milford and Goffstown, two of the most physical teams in Division III, will meet there for a 1:30 p.m. kickoff.

The winner should have the inside track on a playoff spot. The lose could probably start making plans for weekends in November.

“Somebody has to win and somebody has to lose,” Milford coach Keith Jones said. “You’ve gotta help yourself … we control our fate right now. It’s almost like we’re in the playoffs already.”

Both teams enter the game with a division record of 3-2, and thanks to Portsmouth’s win over Hollis/Brookline Friday night, the winner will be in a four-way tie for second place behind Souhegan (5-0 in division, 6-1 overall).

The loser meanwhile, will pick up its third division loss and will need a lot of help to make the postseason.

Goffstown and Milford enter the game having had ups and downs this season.

The Grizzlies opened the season as the popular pick to be the favorite. But Goffstown got off to an 0-3 overall record (0-2 in division), and since falling under the radar, the Grizzlies have won three in a row to get back into the hunt.

“What we see now is what Goffstown is – a very physical football team,” Jones said. “They have the tools and weapons and can do a lot.”

While Jones has been trying to stay focused on the Grizzlies this week, he knows there are some kids talking about potential games a few weeks down the road.

“I try to focus on one game,” Jones said. “If we can find a way to win out, we’re in a good position.”
