No, the Panthers haven’t change their offensively philosophy in the midst of a three-game winning streak. But for the first time since the second game of the season, the defense won’t be facing an offense that looks like South’s. The Panthers head to Londonderry on Friday for a 7 p.m. kickoff, where they’ll see the only team in the state that runs its offense from the single-wing formation. While it’s tough to prepare for something so unique in what amounts to less than a week, it’s just part of the fun of playing in Division I. “That’s the cool thing about the league; it’s not boring to watch because there’s always something different,” South coach Scott Knight said. “You’ve got a few spread teams and all the spread teams are a different style of spread. You’ve got Salem that’s all double tights and wings and shoe-to-shoe splits. You’ve got an old school wing-T in Pinkerton. You’ve got multiple-I in (Manchester) Central. This league, there’s always something different.” What’s different this year is Londonderry’s spot in the standings. The Lancers (1-4 in division, 1-5 overall) enter the game having lost three straight, with their lone win of the year coming against winless Exeter. Last week, Londonderry gave Central a scare, but a fumble at the Little Green 2-yard line ended any chance of the Lancers walking away with a win. “I look at film and see Londonderry moving the ball up and down the field against Central and they’re a fumble on the 2 away from winning that game,” Knight said. “This Londonderry team is not someone you look past. If we don’t play well, anybody can beat us.” The Panthers (3-1, 4-2) have been playing well as of late. South followed up a blowout of Concord with a convincing win over Nashua North last week and now the Panthers are starting to return to full strength. South could be without nose tackle Brandon Dupray while linebacker Chris Thistle, who didn’t play against North, could be back this week. While Knight is happy his team is getting healthy, he’s also excited about the depth that the injuries have created. When Thistle went down, the team scrambled to find depth at his position, and eventually plugged in Brandon Gauthier, who has played well in that spot. “You’re better off getting injured early than late because when you get injured early, it builds depth,” Knight said. “That’s what happens in 2008\. When we played Lowell in 2008, at one point we had eight sophomores on defense. We lost that game. It was an embarrassing loss. Then we just started getting better and put points on the board. By the end of the year, you’ve got guys waiting in the wings who are ready to play.” Some of those guys are now seniors who have the experience of playing on a championship team as sophomores. “This is a group that’s been there,” Knight said. “I’m hoping we can keep the ball rolling.”
