# South executes on both sides to roll Concord

NASHUA – On a sloppy, rainy night, the Nashua High School South football team did some cleaning.

The Panthers took care of business on both sides of the ball, executing on what coach Scott Knight calls “money downs,” and rolled to a 41-7 win over Concord Friday night at Stellos Stadium.

South took advantage of two early fumbles by the Crimson Tide, and with a big lead in the second half, the Panthers didn’t let up on both sides of the ball.

“I’m proud of the way we cleaned some stuff up the last few weeks,” Knight said. “We’ve struggled since last year on money downs on both sides of the ball. Tonight we had a couple of big plays. Johnny Bieren had a big stop in the third quarter.”

South got two rushing touchdowns each from Armond McRae (87 yards rushing) and Derek Paradis (80) while Keith Farkas completed touchdown passes to Connor Leary and Nilsson Basora.

But although the South (2-1 in Division I, 3-2 overall) offense was successful all night, the Panthers’ defense was even better.

Concord (2-2, 3-2) managed just 169 yards of offense and fumbled three times, losing two. On the three occasions that the Tide had a third-and-short yardage to go, the Panthers got off the field each time.

The biggest on came with South already up by five scores.

Despite leading 34-0 at halftime, players on the South sideline could be heard yelling that the game wasn’t over. After allowing Lowell and Manchester Memorial to put up big second-half points in the last two weeks, that certainly was the case.

With Concord facing third-and-1 at its 41, quarterback Drew Bolton kept the ball and went for the first down. But Bieren blew through the line and brought Bolton down for a 4-yard loss.

“It was huge,” South linebacker Mike Brannen said. “The line did a great job of protecting the backs and the backs made sure everyone was ready to go. We kept the intensity. We didn’t want to lose any intensity whatsoever, so that was huge.”

The Tide punted and the Panthers responded with a 15-play, 86-yard drive that ate up almost seven minutes. Paradise carried the ball six times on the drive for 38 yards, and McRae finished it off with a 14-yard scoring run to put South up 41-0 in the third quarter.

“We controlled the ball,” Knight said. “We converted some key third-and-shorts, fourth-and-shorts, some things we have struggled with.

“I’m happy with the way we hit on both sides of the ball and the way we executed. That was our goal, we wanted to hit. To play a physical style of football because I think that’s where we’re headed. We’re big up front and I thought we’d be able to lean on them a bit. I was happy with the way we hit and tackled on defense.”

South got on the board on the first play of its second drive, scoring on a 38-yard touchdown run by McRae. The Tide fumbled the ensuing kickoff and South’s Ray Ramos recovered the ball at Concord’s 8.

Two plays later, Farkas threw a pass that went through the hands of Brandon Gauthier, but went right to Leary in the corner of the end zone. With 7:33 left in the first quarter, the Panthers led 14-0.

Concord looked like it would get back into the game, driving down to the South 35-yard line. But quarterback Graham McIntire fumbled the snap on third-and-1 and Allen O’Dell recovered it.

“We were able to capitalize on some things,” Knight said. “We struggled on some things. We look at those things and say if we can clean it up, we can be pretty good. Tonight we did.”

South returns to action on Friday when it takes on Nashua North at Stellos Stadium at 7 p.m.
