AMHERST - The Souhegan High School girls basketball team built up a double-digit lead in the first half and held on in the second to knock off upset-minded Windham, 61-55, in the Division II quarterfinals on Friday.

Jane White score 17 of her game-high 27 points in the first half and the top-seeded Sabers (20-0) survived a 24-point third quarter by the No. 9 Jaguars that saw the Souhegan led go from 18 at halftime to just three early in the fourth quarter.

Christan Wojtas added 13 points and Lauren Cordts had 10 for Souhegan. Windham (12-8) got 15 points from Bernadette Connors while Clairee Putnam had 12 markers and Kerry White added 10 points.

Souhegan jumped out to a 15-4 lead midway through the first quarter before Windham battled back to make it a five-point game. But the Jaguars, who were in their first season as a varsity program, turned the ball over several times and the Sabers took a 21-10 lead into the second quarter.

The Sabers pushed the lead to as many as 21 points in the second quarter and led 37-19 at halftime. Windham turned the ball over 14 times in the first half and was just 4-of-10 from the free throw line over the first 16 minutes.

But the Jaguars came out in control in the third, going on a 9-0 run to cut the lead in half. Souhegan was able get the lead back up to 10 points on a layup by White, but the Jaguars went on a 10-2 run to make it 48-45 Souhegan early in the fourth quarter.

Windham had a chance to pull within one or tie the game, but a steal by Wojtas led to a fastbreak layup by White and Cordts added another layup on the next possession to make it a seven-point game again. The Jaguars cut the lead to five twice in the final three minutes, but couldn't get any closer.

Souhegan advances to the Division II semifinals, where it will face No. 12 John Stark, which upset No. 4 Merrimack Valley 52-43.
