For the first time since moving up to Division I a decade ago, Bishop Guertin wouldn't be advancing to the semifinals, and the Sabers stopped that streak with one of their best defensive performances of the season. No. 3 Souhegan held No. 6 Bishop Guertin to its second-lowest offensive output of the season and the Sabers did just enough offensively for a 7-4 victory in the D1 quarterfinals. The win sends Souhegan (13-3) to the final four for the third time in four years where it will take on No. 2 Pinkerton at 5 p.m. Sunday at Bill Ball Stadium in Exeter. "I do think we had great poise out there and great fight," Curro-Sbordone said. "We played a little frantic in the first half, but I think we settled into our game and our game plan. To hold one of the best teams in the state to four goals, that is incredible." It comes on the heels of the Sabers holding the Cardinals to just five goals in their regular-season meeting just two weeks ago. "Our defense has taken a lot of risks and we’ve tried a lot of different things this season," Curro-Sbordone said. "Buy-in is a huge thing that has shifted with us. They’re playing as a unit. Sophie Jacobs is a game-changer, she’s one of the best defenders I’ve seen, her presence on the field. Our entire defensive unit and our goalie did an amazing job." Libby Kennedy led Souhegan with three goals and Lanai Hickman added two goals while Izzy Stevenson had a goal and two assists. Lola Dumont had three goals for Bishop Guertin (10-7) and Sarah Brunelle had one, as Souhegan held Abby Lynn, the Cardinals' leading scorer, without a goal. "They came out with a lot of pressure. Souhegan is a good team and defensively they put a lot of pressure on our attackers," Bishop Guertin coach Callie Santos said. "We struggled to get the ball moving, and when you don’t get the ball moving against a zone, you’re going to struggle. Ultimately, that’s what our downfall was offensively. We started trying to push it in that fourth quarter, but it was too little, too late." Souhegan led 3-2 at halftime and went up 4-2 midway through the third quarter, but Dumont got it back to a one-goal game with 5:18 left before the fourth. The Cardinals won the ensuing draw, but ended up turning the ball over and Hickman scored at the other end to make it 5-3 Souhegan. That turnover started a run of six straight possessions with a turnover for Bishop Guertin and the Sabers added another goal for a three-goal lead. "It didn’t come together," Santos said. "The turnovers really hurt. We were winning the draw, we were getting the ball down on offense, and we were throwing it away. There’s a lot of nerves. "Keep chipping away, keep working on the things we know how to do, but we continued to struggle to do that."
