AMHERST - No matter what was thrown at the Souhegan High School girls lacrosse team Tuesday night, the Sabers managed to keep their composure.

When Bishop Guertin scored the first goal of the game, the Sabers battled right back.

And when the Cardinals went on a late run, as weather conditions deteriorated, Souhegan managed to hang on to its lead and finish off an 11-8 win over Bishop Guertin in a Division I contest.

"We just played as a team and put everything we had out there," Souhegan's Abby Cranney said. "I think it's just knowing each other and who we are, and staying composed is a big thing."

The Sabers (6-0) needed that focus early, as Bishop Guertin (4-2) scored the game's first goal 1:03 in, and they responded with five straight goals, while maintaining possession for long stretches of the first half.

"They don't (get flustered)," Souhegan coach Maren Petropulos said. "We've started several games where we haven't scored first. I just think they come back up and they know they have a job to do and they go and do it."

Emma Estabrook scored all three of her goals in the second half to lead the Sabers while Brigid Casey had two goals and an assist. Cranney and Sammi Jay also scored two goals apiece and Savannah Behn and Taylor Clark had a goal and an assist each.

Meaghan Allard made eight saves, including a handful in the first half, when the Cardinals were unable to capitalize on opportunities.

"We definitely shot at the goalie, and that didn't help us in the opportunities that we had," Bishop Guertin coach Kerry D'Ambroise said. "We were in the game, so I'm not upset. I think it's a great stepping stone.

"I think it's frustrating, but that was in the first half, which was fine. In the second half, we usually play better. Our shooting was off in the first, so being able to pick it up in the second half was helpful. We had multiple opportunities to score."

The Cardinals took advantage of the first one, winning the opening draw and getting a goal by Kate Bradford in the first 70 seconds of the game. Bradford finished with three goals, as did Olivia Koutsos, while Emily Santom had a goal and two assists and Katie Lupo had a goal and a helper.

After some back-and-forth action at each end, Souhegan tied it on a free-position goal by Jay. The Sabers won the ensuing draw and took the lead on Behn's goal with 16:12 left in the half.

Souhegan scored the next three goals over a 13-minute span in which the Sabers had possession for most of the time.

Santom opened the second-half scoring to get Bishop Guertin within two goals, 5-3, with 18:48 left, but Souhegan pushed the lead up to five by outscoring the Cardinals 4-1 over the next 10 minutes, as the rain intensified.

But after a goal by Cranney made it 9-4 with 8:54 left, Bishop Guertin won the draw and Koutsos scored 33 seconds later. That started the Cardinals on a 3-0 run over the next 1:48 that got them back within two goals and forced Souhegan to take a timeout.

"They just had that boost off the draws," Cranney said. "Once we stopped them on the draws, that was all they had. I think getting there first and switching players and knowing our abilities brought us to the next level."

The Sabers switched up their personnel on the draw and won the next two, getting a goal from Estabrook in between to go up 10-7 with 4:57 remaining.

It looked like Souhegan retook control of the game moments later, but a goal by Clark was waved off for a dangerous follow through and she was given a yellow card, putting Bishop Guertin up a player for two minutes.

Koutsos scored on the ensuing possession to get the Cardinals back within two goals, but Souhegan won the draw and was able to keep possession for the final three minutes of the game before Cranney's late goal made it 11-8.

"They're an incredibly talented team," Petropulos said of Bishop Guertin. "We had a plan that we had to come in and execute. We had some gaps in those plans, but I think the girls recovered."
