AMHERST - For most of Friday night, the Souhegan High School girls lacrosse struggled on the draw against Bedford.

But when the Sabers needed it most, they were able to get possession, whether it was forcing turnovers in the second half, or finally winning controls down the stretch, none bigger than at the start of overtime.

With the game tied 9-9, Taylor Dudek got the draw to start the three-minute extra session and found Abby Cranney to start a fast break.

Cranney then found Savannah Behn going to the goal and hit her in stride, giving Behn the chance to beat Bedford goalie Hannah Pardis just 13 seconds into overtime for the 10-9 win.

It was Behn's third goal of the game - all of which came in the final 10-plus minutes - and Souhegan's fifth win in a row against the Bulldogs, including last season's Division I championship game.

"That was beautiful," Souhegan coach Maren Petropulos said of the game-winning goal. "We switched up a little thing on the draw that time. I think we got a little more physical on the draw. We were constantly stressing the groundballs on the draw and running through them, and that’s exactly what Taylor Dudek did. She had a great pass to Abby and Abby had a great feed."

Taylor Clark and Sammi Jay added two goals for Souhegan (14-1) while Izzy Aiello and Brigid Casey had a goal and an assist apiece and O'Neill Galinson also scored. Alex LaBrosse made two saves in goal, as both teams took a low number of shots and scored on most of them.

LaBrosse's biggest save of the night came late in the second half, moments after Clark picked up her second yellow card of the game, and with Souhegan up 8-7\. Hannah McCarthy had a free position but LaBrosse came up with the stop to keep it a one-goal game.

That was one of a handful of stops for the Sabers in the second half after a rough start by the defense.

"Our defense took almost a whole half to settle in," Petropulos said. "Typically our defense kicks right in and for some reason they didn’t. We had a great game against Pinkerton (on Wednesday) and there is always a letdown after you have a win like that. We had to regroup."

Souhegan's defense needed to step up, with Bedford (13-3) winning 14 of 21 draws overall, including 8 of 11 in the second half.

"When we lose a draw, we want to get it back," Souhegan senior McKenzie Robinson said. "We just play hard defense, we work together, we know if we get a turnover it’s going to be our ball, so we just work hard. We get it up and just keep pushing. We talk about who we need to pressure, who we need to shut off, who needs to go out and who needs to stay in. The communication piece really helps get it."

The teams traded goals in the first five minutes of the game and it stayed a 1-1 contest for much of the first half. Clark gave Souhegan a 2-1 with 10:51 to go in the first half and Jay made it 3-1 a little more than six minutes after that.

And then the goals started to come, as Bedford scored twice in two minutes to tie the game at 3, and each team scored in the final minute to make it 4-4 going into halftime.

The Bulldogs opened the second half with goals from Brooke Burdon and McCarthy to take a 6-4 lead just 1:55 into the half. Aiello answered for Souhegan to make it 6-5, but McCarthy came right back with another goal less than a minute later.

"They just had good transition and good shots," Robinson said. "I think we were a little low energy. Once we got our energy back up and played like a team. We got it right back in."

Bedford won the ensuing draw, but a turnover gave the ball to Souhegan, and the Sabers were able to slow the pace down before getting a goal from Casey with 16:15 left. That started Souhegan on a 3-0 run, with Behn's first goal making it 8-7 with 10:07 left in regulation.

Courtney Derm scored off an assist from McCarthy with 3:40 to play to tie the game, but Behn scored off the draw to give Souhegan the lead just 12 seconds later. Bedford took the next draw and tied the game again on a goal by Mackenzie MacEachern with 2:14 remaining.

Both teams had a chance for the win in regulation, but turned the ball over without getting a shot, sending the game to overtime.
