NASHUA - The Souhegan High School girls lacrosse team has been working to improve on certain aspects of its game, and this week in practice, Sabers coach Maren Petropulos saw those things start to come together.

Against Bishop Guertin on Friday, the Sabers gave their coach a glimpse at the completed picture.

Souhegan used an 11-2 run at the end of the first half and into the second to pull away and hand the Cardinals a 21-9 loss at Rivier University in Nashua. It was the first setback of the season for Bishop Guertin, who allowed a season high in goals against and scored a season low.

Mickenzie Larivee led the way for the Sabers (9-2 in Division I) by scoring nine goals - seven of which came during Souhegan's run - and added an assist. Madison Learned also had six goals and three helpers and Jesse Jay had four goals and an assist.

"We've struggled with a few things, but this past week, we've had great practices and the captains have really stepped up and taken control of pieces of practices," Petropulos said. "We wanted to make sure we continued getting the draws and I thought we did a good job taking care of the ball."

Averi Farhat led Bishop Guertin (9-1 in Division II) with seven goals, but the Cardinals weren't able to get much going offensively because they weren't able to get possession off the draw.

"I think this was a game where you could see that whoever had possession was going to do the job on attack," Bishop Guertin coach Mandy Rogers said. "When we were not getting possession on the draws, their attack is just too explosive."

The Cardinals got out to a 2-0 lead just 1:09 into the game, but Souhegan came right back, scoring three straight to take a 3-2 lead just 1:38 later. The teams then traded goals until a score by Farhat knotted things at 4 with 14:30 left in the first half.

But then the Sabers, and Larivee, took over. The senior scored to put Souhegan up 5-4, then after goals by Learned and Jay, Larivee scored back-to-back to make it 9-4\. The Sabers took a 12-6 lead into halftime and Larivee added three straight goals to make it 15-6 with 20:37 still to play.

"In the warmup, I felt it through the team, that our energy was up," Larivee said. "That pumped me up a lot. I just got open, I guess. I knew when we got up, we had to take that and continue to push. That was the run that we needed."
