HOLLIS - Mike Lochman told his Souhegan High School football team it had to do in the second half Saturday against Hollis Brookline. Souhegan didn't, putting up over 200 yards in the second half to knock off HB 21-7 in Division II action. Tyler Howard led the way for Souhegan with 104 yards and two touchdowns on 18 carries and Mike Mancini found Zach Bossi for a 27-yard touchdown pass in the third quarter to put the Sabers (2-1) ahead for good. "We went in (at halftime) and told the kids not to panic," Lochman said. "We were playing decent ball, but we made some simple mistakes that we felt like if we cleaned up, we'd be better and we'd have a chance to pull away." After HB's Matt Ferenczhalmy ran for 40 yards on the first play of the second half, the Souhegan defense tightened up. The Cavs managed to get just 49 yards on 19 plays, with just three first downs, the rest of the way, with most of that coming on a 10-play drive at the end of the game. "There's going to be mistakes in every game, but you have to find a way to overcome them and we didn't," HB coach Chris Lones said. "That falls on the coaching staff. We've got to do a better job of getting the kids ready." The Cavs (1-3) got a solid game from quarterback Patch Zorn, who was 10 of 15 passing for 135 yards with a touchdown and an interception, while Tommy Grant caught three passes for 46 yards and a score. Ferenczhalmy rushed for 96 yards on 19 carries, but 60 of those yards came on two plays. "We talked about him all week long," Lochman said of Ferenczhalmy. "I'm proud of the way we handled him. He's one of those guys who if he gets rolling, you're in big trouble. He make yards with three guys hanging on him." But in the second half, it was Howard breaking tackles and picking up yards, as he ran for 81 yards in the second half, while Mancini was 7 of 14 for 86 yards with a touchdown and interception. "It's a great weapon to have because most of our backs are quick, athlete-in-space types, so to have him to tenderize the middle of the defense, it's a nice compliment," Lochman said. "This team was geared to stop our outside run game, and that was what was there, so we took it." After scoring on a 1-yard run in the first quarter to put Souhegan up 7-0, Howard had 20 yards on the Sabers' opening drive of the third. HB went three-and-out on its next possession and Souhegan moved the ball down to the Cavs' 20 thanks in part to a 13-yard completion from Mancini to Bossi and a 16-yard run by Howard. But on second down, Manici was intercepted by Tommy Schmalz, who tipped the ball to himself and made the catch as he was falling out of bounds. But again, the Cavs could go no where and big punt return by Bossi gave Souhegan the ball at the HB 27\. On fourth-and-1 from the 9, Howard went up the middle and ran over Zorn on his way to the end zone to make it 21-7 with 7:23 to play. "I saw (Zorn) right at the end zone and I just said 'I'm getting into this end zone, there's no way he’s going to stop me,' " Howard said. "I'm just going to go and push through it." HB's lone touchdown came on the first play after Souhegan turned the ball over on downs when Bossi couldn't get a running punt off and was tackled 11 yards short of the first-down marker. Zorn found Grant near the goal line on the far side of the field and the HB senior went up to get the ball and walked into the end zone to tie the game with 6:37 left in the second. "We're trying to put Patch into position to make plays but not ask him to do too much," Lones said. "He's still a very green quarterback. He was able to take advantage of some things." Souhegan returns home on Friday to host Windham, while HB goes on the road to take on John Stark on Saturday.
