AMHERST - The Souhegan High School football team, coming off a strong performance in its season opening win against St. Thomas, continued that strong start Friday against ConVal.

The dominant victory for the Sabers over the Cougars left Souhegan at an impressive 2-0 in Division II. Although the Cougars were able to seal a win in their season opener as well, they were outmatched on both sides of the ball in this contest. The loss dropped the Cougars season record to 1-1.

The Saber offense was led by junior quarterback Austin Jain. Jain’s precision through the air left the Cougars' defense in shambles.

Jain was also very effective on the ground as well, as he led the Sabers' offense with two passing touchdowns, one to receiver Ryan Hauser and the other to receiver Luke Manning. Jain also scored the game's first touchdown on a keeper play for the 1-yard touchdown. Jain’s three-touchdown night set the tone for the whole offense, while also leaving the Cougars defense guessing.

The ConVal offense couldn’t get much going the entire game. Each time the Cougars were able to gain yardage on a great play call, the very next play, the Sabers would stuff them for a big loss. The ConVal sideline was calling for their team to communicate, but ultimately fell short of the task.

The biggest lapse in communication came on the kickoff following a Sabers' touchdown. Souhegan, only up one score at that point, kicked off. The Conval return team watched the ball pass by the first wave of their return team, only to be recovered quickly by the Sabers.

That set the Sabers up in excellent striking distance. The very next play, Jain connected with his receiver for a 40-yard touchdown pass. This took the wind out of the Cougars' sails for the remainder of the game.

Both teams return to action Friday, when ConVal returns home to host Hollis Brookline, while Souhegan goes back on the road to take on Alvirne. Both games kickoff at 7 p.m.
