AMHERST - Forcing turnovers in the red zone is a huge momentum killer.

Taking advantage of those turnovers and turning them into touchdowns can get the snowball rolling. For the Souhegan High School football team, doing so created an avalanche.

The Sabers took advantage of a Hollis Brookline fumble in side their 20-yard line and turned it into points, starting an onslaught that led to a 50-7 win for Souhegan.

Jon Nogueira rushed for 145 yards and four touchdowns on 16 carries while Cam Kinney added 147 yards and two scores on 14 carries as Souhegan (3-0) gained 486 of its 535 yards on the ground.

But it started with the fumble, which came early in the second quarter of a 7-7 game that could have gone a lot differently had the Cavaliers (1-3) been the ones doing the scoring.

"That could have been the game right there," Souhegan coach Mike Lochman said. "They do a nice job of throwing the ball around and it could have been dangerous. That could have been a different game at that point. I'm glad they could recover from a sloppy quarter and come back and play our style of football."

Souhegan turned the ball over on its first offensive play, committed infractions at crucial times – including three flags on one play – and watched as HB answered the Sabers first touchdown with a scoring drive of its own.

With the scored tied 7-7 early in the second quarter, Souhegan elected to go for it on fourth-and-1 from its own 42 and ended up losing yardage. HB moved the ball inside the 30, and on second down, Wyatt Farwell picked up enough yards for a first down into the red zone, but the Cavs senior lost ball at the end of the run. Souhegan recovered at its own 10.

Hollis Brookline's Tyler Bergerson makes a pass.

"I told the guys after that we can focus on the negatives in the first quarter," Lochman said. "We were sloppy, we had some penalties, I think we were a little overhyped. Or we could talk about the fact that we did a nice job recovering from those mistakes. Sometimes that happens and it ends up being a spiral. That could have been disastrous."

Nine plays later, Nogueira ended the drive with a 35-yard touchdown run that made 14-7 Sabers with 6:54 left in the second. Souhegan also scored on its next three drives to take a 29-7 lead into halftime.

"We knew what we had to stop and we just didn't do it," HB coach Chris Lones said. "We've got young kids playing varsity football. All the reps in the world don't matter when the lights are bright. All of a sudden, they get out there and want to make a play, and it's not about making a play, it's about doing your job."

The Cavs were already down their starting quarterback, Joey Delaney, with backup Tyler Bergerson - who led a fourth-quarter comeback last week against Sanborn - making his first start. But HB lost inside linebacker Peter Bertone to an injury during warmups, then saw Caleb Lomme and Michael Gillespie also go down.

"We lost people," Lones said. "That's been the story of our season. We lost one before we even started. When you show up at the field with 33 kids, you can't lose four. We started the game with four freshmen (on the field)."

Nogueira put Souhegan up 7-0 with a 24-yard touchdown run with 5:33 left in the first quarter, but HB responded with a 15-play, 78-yard drive to tie the game. The Cavs scored when quarterback Tyler Bergerson found Colton Mailloux for a completion to the Souhegan 3-yard line. Mailloux fumbled the ball when he was hit, but Gillespie recovered in the end zone for the touchdown.

But things started to go downhill on HB's next drive, which ended with the fumble. Souhegan finished the half with three touchdowns in just under seven minutes, and opened the second half with an eight-play, 89-yard drive, with Nogueira scoring on a 14-yard run to make it 36-7.

The senior added a 1-yard scoring run on the Sabers' next drive and Dante Savo scored on an 86-yard run on the final play of the third quarter to round out the scoring.
