DERRY - The Souhegan High School football team piled up almost five hundred yards of offense Saturday and got a defensive touchdown early in the second half to grab a 43-33 win over Pelham in Division II South Conference action.

John Lohnes led the way for the Sabers (3-3), rushing for 113 yards while going 15 of 30 through the air for 198 yards and three touchdown passes, including two to Trey Johnson, as Souhegan gained 471 yards and picked up 19 first downs to continue its up and down season. The Sabers have alternated wins and losses each week.

Johnson finished with 134 total yards on offense and three touchdowns while Tyler Hall rushed for 118 yards and a score. Luke Manning added eight catches for 73 yards and a touchdown as Souhegan withstood a fast start from Pelham and took control of the game early in the third quarter.

After driving down to the Pelham 18-yard line on their first possession of the second half, the Sabers turned the ball over on downs. But on the Pythons first play, the snap sailed over the head of quarterback Ian Hoey and Souhegan's Alexander Karpawich recovered the fumble in the end zone to put the Sabers up 36-21.

Pelham (3-3) had a big day on offense of its own, with 352 yards, including 114 yards and a touchdown rushing from Charlie Katin. Katin also returned a kickoff 79 yards for a touchdown and Hoey, Matthew Crowley and Mason Fecteau each had a rushing touchdown for the Pythons.

Souhegan was forced to punt on its first possession, and on Pelham's first play, Katin raced through the Sabers' defense for a 50-yard touchdown.

The Sabers tied the game two possessions later on a 73-yard touchdown pass from Lohnes to Johnson, but the Pythons responded, getting a 51-yard run by Brett Lindsay to set up a 12-yard touchdown run by Fecteau. Katin ran in the two-point conversion to give Pelham a 15-7 lead.

Souhegan answered with a 14-play, 61-yard drive that ended with a 20-yard touchdown pass from Lohnes to Johnson, and the Sabers quarterback ran in the conversion to tie the game again.

Johnson added an 8-yard touchdown run on Souhegan's next possession and Pelham responded with a 1-yard scoring run by Crowley, but the Pythons opted to go for two again and didn't convert, leaving the Sabers up 22-21\. Lohnes got his third touchdown pass of the half, finding Manning for a 15-yard score that made it 29-21 Souhegan at halftime.

Katin answered Karpawich's defensive touchdown by returning the kickoff for a score, but Pelham again unsuccessfully went for two, and trailed 36-29 with 6:07 left in the third quarter.

Hall put the game out of reach for the Sabers with a 53-yard touchdown run with 7:57 left to make it 43-27\. Pelham responded on its next drive, going 66-yards on eight plays, scoring on Hoey's 1-yard run, but after another failed conversion, the Pythons trailed by 10 with 5:39 to go.

Souhegan was to run out the clock after that, picking up three first downs on the final drive to get the win.
