AMHERST - Almost anything can happen in rivalry games, and Friday night's contest between the Souhegan and Milford high school football teams was no different.

The Sabers got big plays from their offense and the defense made a stand when it needed to, as Souhegan knocked off the Spartans 20-12 in Division II action.

The first quarter was a picture perfect start for the Sabers (2-2), as after shutting down the Spartans' attack on the first series, the Souhegan special teams unit rose to the occasion. With Milford set to punt, the Spartans had difficulties fielding the snap, giving the Sabers the extra time they needed to not only able to block the kick attempt, but also gave their offense excellent field position for their first drive of the game.

The block sent the crown into a frenzy and gave the Sabers an incredible surge. The first play of the Sabers offensive drive resulted in a 20-yard touchdown run by Dante Savo. A failed two-point conversion would put the Sabers up 6-0 just less than three minutes into the game.

The Spartans hung in there though, and the rest of the first quarter was mostly a defensive battle, going punt for punt after stalled offensive drives from both sides.

Milford (2-3) would end up responding with an incredible drive of its own, chewing over five minutes of game time after Milford’s Owen Clary took the fullback dive into the end zone for a 5-yard touchdown run. This score, after the missed extra point attempt, tied the game 6-6 with just seven minutes remaining in the half.

Souhegan quarterback John Lehones would respond on the following drive with some massive plays of his own. He opened up with a perfectly timed 40-yard deep fade route with his speedy receiver, Max Leonard, and the pair would connect again for a 20-yard touchdown toss to put the Sabers up 13-6 with under five minutes remaining.

Milford quarterback Zack King would match the Sabers momentum, willing his team to a long, tough, and ground-heavy drive. The Spartans gained between 6 and 7 yards per carry, driving deep into Souhegan territory, down to the 5-yard line. Unfortunately, the first play in the red zone was a muffed snap, recovered instantly by the Sabers. Souhegan kneeled on the ball, and took the game to halftime.

The Spartans defense stepped up in the second half, opening the third quarter with a much needed interception by Michael Boucher, who proceeded to weave his way 60 yards for the Milford pick-6\. Another missed extra point attempt would pull the Spartans to 13-12.

After another strong defensive showing by the Spartans, the Sabers were forced to punt again. Milford would answer by driving the ball all the way into the Souhegan red zone, but came up without points after a missed field goal attempt. Souhegan would eventually find some rhythm when Leonard, with some impressive route running skills, would haul in a deep 30-yard pass on the first offensive play, and again for the touchdown on the second offensive play to put the Sabers up 20-12 with a minute left in the third .

In the fourth quarter both teams had trouble piecing together a lasting drive, and both units were forced to punt time and again. Souhegan's defense ended the game late when King’s pass, which had more than enough distance on it, would end up being picked off by Trey Johnson.
