HOLLIS - The season may not be that old yet, but the Souhegan High School field hockey team already has its fair share of overtime experience.

For the third time in four games to start the year, the Sabers found themselves going to an extra session.

Souhegan drew from those previous two lessons Tuesday night against Hollis Brookline, and despite the Cavaliers dominating possession for long stretches of regulation, the Sabers found themselves with an opportunity in overtime and took advantage.

After Souhegan was able to shut down an HB penalty corner, the Sabers got out on the break, and Ori Dart found Ella Russell at the far post for the game-winning with 52 seconds left to finish a 3-2 win in Division II action.

"It was intense," Russell said. "I got a breakaway. We fought for every ball. Ori got the ball and she did an amazing lifted assist and I was ready for the ball on the post."

Dart also had a goal while Ari Goulet had a goal and an assist, with both scores coming in the first quarter to give the Sabers (3-1) a 2-0 lead.

From the start of the second quarter, HB (0-2) flipped the script, controlling play and repeatedly putting the ball in its offensive circle. The Cavs had 10 penalty corners in the first half, to none for the Sabers, and took advantage of two of them.

Nyah Jernberg scored with 11:55 left in the half to cut Souhegan's lead in half, then just before halftime, she sent a shot to the far post, where Katrina Lee deflected it into the goal, tying the game with 2:49 to go until the break.

"We started super strong," Souhegan coach Kelli Braley said. "I don’t think it was a matter of us taking the foot off the gas, I think we might have got gassed a little bit. HB just kept on coming. Once they got that first one, they smelled blood in the water and that’s when they really opened up."

After a bad start, the Cavs knew they needed to regroup in order to stay in the game.

"I thought our pace started well, but we played sloppy," HB coach Greg Cochrane said. "We want to try to move the ball and create space rather than react to it. We didn’t do a great job, but I thought we were resilient. After halftime, we came out and played like we want to play. I’m happy with the way we finished. It wasn’t the result we wanted, but it wasn’t a lack of effort."

Souhegan got its first corner early in the third quarter, but HB cleared the circle and kept the ball on the Sabers' side of midfield for most of the quarter. It was more of the same in the fourth, but the Cavs couldn't get the go-ahead goal.

"Their layers were the perfect distance away from each other, so they were able to make quick passes and their communication was great," Braley said. "They were able to move the ball upfield quickly. They were able to capitalize on us getting out of space.

"The flipside of it is we didn’t do our job of keeping sticks low and breaking down our steps and making sure we were in a good defensive position for some 50-50 balls that they got the touch on. They stayed really strong positionally and played their system well."

The Sabers finally got an opportunity in the final minutes of regulation, but Cavs goalie Rae Kline (four saves) came up with a big stop to keep it tied. Souhegan got two more corners in the final minute, but couldn't score.

Kline made another save early in the overtime, but neither team had a great chance until HB was awarded a corner with under two minutes to play. The Sabers were able to clear the circle, and with the Cavs playing up trying to get the goal, Souhegan was able to get an oddman breakaway.

"We were fortunate to catch a break on Hollis’s corner," Braley said. "They were heavy offensively, and that’s certainly a strategy that works. All you have to do is put it in, but only having one (defender) back allowed us to have a three-on-one and we buried it."
