AMHERST – The Souhegan High School field hockey team had seen this happen before.

Get an early lead, watch it disappear and go to overtime. That’s what happened in the Sabers’ regular-season finale against Windham, and Souhegan lost in the extra session.

This time, the Sabers did everything they could – and got a little help from a post – to avoid a repeat.

Devon Hickey scored her second goal of the game 2:43 into overtime as No. 6 Souhegan got past No. 11 Goffstown, 2-1, in the Division II preliminary round on Wednesday. The win gives the Sabers a rematch with No. 3 Windham in the quarterfinals at 2 p.m. on Saturday.

Souhegan's Lauren McCormick takes a swing at the ball.

“You practice all season for a game just like that,” Souhegan coach Kelly Warecki said. “No quit the whole time, cutting to balls, fast movement, good communication and they played right to the very end.”

Hickey opened the scoring a little more than three minutes into the game, and Souhegan (10-6) made the goal stand until late, when Goffstown’s Tori Florence tied the game with just under six minutes left in regulation.

“They played well enough to win, unfortunately, we didn’t get that last shot,” Goffstown coach Jess Brown said. “I think that speaks to the character of the team. In those final minutes, it’s easy to get frantic. They kept their composure and they knew what they wanted to do.”

Souhegan’s Morgan Chamberlain made 12 saves, including a stop on a penalty stroke by Goffstown’s Hannah Gifford with 18:27 left in the first half. Goffstown goalie Bry Fournier stopped eight shots.

After trailing for most of the first half, the Grizzlies (6-8-1) were able to take the momentum and put pressure on the Souhegan defense in the second half. The Sabers needed a couple of big saves from Chamberlain to keep the Grizzlies off the board while they struggled to keep the ball at Goffstown’s end of the field.

“Morgan was phenomenal,” Warecki said. “She was on all day. I love that feeling you get watching warmups and knowing my goalie is on. She put her all into it. The team rallied around her and it was outstanding.”

Goffstown's Rosa Edmonds moves the ball through the midfield.

Florence tied the game with 5:53 to play by rolling the ball in during a scrum in front of the cage. Souhegan was finally able to get a couple of chances before regulation ended, but nothing came close and the team’s headed to overtime.

Goffstown got the first chance of the extra session, but a shot from left to right hit the far post.

“It’s unlucky,” Brown said. “They had great shots and in the second half, we had a lot of the momentum. We just weren’t able to get that push.”

Souhegan got it almost immediately after. The Sabers quickly got the ball to the other end, and Fournier stopped the first shot from Hickey.

But the ball bounced around in front of the net, and Hickey was able to knock it past a couple of Goffstown players, just crossing the goal line, to get the Sabers the win.

And now Souhegan will get another shot at Windham.

“We were up on them pretty early and they’ve learned some lessons from these last two games,” Warecki said. “It’s very fresh in their minds. They know what it’s going to take to beat them.”
