Souhegan falls to Portsmouth in final match

The Souhegan High School girls tennis team lost four of six singles matches on the way to a 5-4 loss to Portsmouth on Monday in Class I action.

The Sabers finished up the regular season with an 8-6 record, and will wait to find out their playoff fate. Souhegan was ninth in Class I according to the most recent standings, which are determined by the Heal Point System; the top eight teams make the tournament.

Souhegan's Alex Silva and Portsmouth's Lindsay Duplessis played the match of the day at No. 2 singles, with Silva taking a 9-8 (11-9) win. Emily Readdy won the No. 1 singles match for Souhegan, defeating Alyx Barnes, 8-5.

But the Sabers dropped the other four singles matches. Emily Parrett fell at No. 3 to Katie Meade, 8-4, and Mia Ommundsen fell at No. 4 to Ally Greco, 8-2, while Portsmouth's Savannah Fodero defeated Caroline Hagen, 8-2, at No. 5, and Candace Maldini defeated Maura Belanger, 8-3, at No. 6.

Readdy and Silva defeated Barnes and Duplessis, 9-7, at No. 1 doubles while Parrett and Ommundsen knocked off Meade and Maldini, 8-4, at No. 2. But Greco and Fadero won the No. 3 match over Hagen and Belanger, 8-3, to give Portsmouth the win.
