Souhegan drops first match to St. Thomas

The Souhegan High School girls tennis team lost its first match of the season, falling to St. Thomas 8-1 at Jasper Valley on Thursday.

The lone win for the Sabers (4-1) came in the No. 4 singles match, where Mia Ommundsen defeated Molly Megna, 9-8.

Souhegan's Emily Readdy not only dropped her first match of the season, but also her first games of the season, falling 8-0 to St. Thomas' Julia Keenard. Last year's state singles champion as a freshman, Keenard is among the top players against this season.

Alex Silva fell to Karina Menard in the No. 2 match, 8-5, while Emily Parrett lost to Michelle Trainor, 9-8, in the No. 3 match. Silva and Parrett, along with Ommundsen, played the best tennis of their careers, according to coach Rick Katzenberg.

Maura Belanger fell to Anna Hayes at No. 5, 8-2, and Emily Hagen dropped the No. 6 match to Heather Trainor, 8-2.

Keenan and Hayes defeated Readdy and Silva, 8-0, in the No. 1 doubles match while Menard and Michelle Trainor won the No. 2 doubles match, 8-2, over Parrett and Ommundsen. Belanger and Trouwee fell to Megna and Heather Trainor in the No. 3 match, 8-1.
