HOLLIS - There was plenty of frustration to go around the Souhegan High School boys basketball team's locker room at halftime Tuesday night.

After a slow start against Hollis Brookline, the Sabers had managed to take a four-point lead at the break thanks to their perimeter shooting, but felt like they'd left some plays on the floor.

In the second half, Souhegan got its offense working inside and out, as they outscored the Cavaliers 25-8 over the first 10 minutes of the half and rolled to a 52-38 win over HB in a Division II game.

Matt McCool scored 11 of his game-high 14 points in the second half to lead three Souhegan (6-1) players in double figures. Jeffrey Boehm added 13 points and Jeffrey Kiesewetter had 12 points, with each hitting a pair of 3-pointers, as the Sabers made seven in total.

"We had a sense of frustration during the second quarter and we had to kind of fight through that," Souhegan coach Peter Pierce said. "They have to mature a little bit and understand that up four (points) on the road is not a bad place to be.

"We’ve got a lot of stuff that we run, we really do, and we’re not good at all of it. We’re just not. For us, it was keep going back to the tool bag until you find something that is working for you. In the second half, we ran a group of plays that got us some wide-open looks and I thought we got to the rim on some of it, too."

Through the first half, the Sabers had just one basket inside the 3-point line in the halfcourt, as they made five 3s and scored the rest of their field goals in transition. But after halftime, Souhegan was able to penetrate the Cavs' interior defense with drives to the basket or lob passes over it.

"The guys were working hard and I’ve got to be able to put them in spots offensively and defensively where we’re going to be successful," HB coach Cole Etten said. "It’s a learning opportunity for them and for me. I thought they played hard, they did everything we asked. It’s my job to put them in a spot where they can be successful to win the game."

HB (5-2) got nine points from Grant Snyder and eight from Quinten Wimmer, as the Cavs struggled to get their offense going in the second half.

Souhegan opened the third quarter with an 8-2 run, going up 32-22 on a 3 by Curtis Redd. After Etten took a timeout, Snyder hit a 3 to cut the lead to seven, but that would be as close as the Cavs would get the rest of the way.

The Sabers went on a 17-3 run, holding HB scoreless for a stretch of almost five minutes, to take a 49-28 lead with 5:27 remaining.

"Thirty-eight is a nice number to look up and see," Pierce said. "We’ve been good defensively, what we’ve given up. I’ve got to think we’re near the top of the division in points allowed. We’ve had a couple of thirty-somethings."

The Cavs jumped out to a 7-0 lead to start the game and led 11-5 on back-to-back baskets by Sander Wimmer. A putback by Wimmer gave HB a 13-9 lead to open the second quarter, but Souhegan answered with a 10-0 run that included 3s by Redd, Kiesewetter and McCool.

HB responded, tying the game at 19 on a three-point play by Snyder, but Souhegan took the lead right back on a 3-pointer by Boehm.

Both teams are back in action on Friday, as Souhegan hosts Pembroke (6-1) and HB welcomes Stevens (0-8) to town. Both games tip-off at 6:30 p.m.
