Pinkerton's T.J. Urbanik looks for room to run during the Queen City Jamboree.

MANCHESTER - When the preseason began, Brian O'Reilly wasn't sure how he would fill the hole in the Pinkerton Academy football team's offensive backfield.

The Astros knew what they had back in running back T.J Urbanik, quarterback Jack Hanaway was progressing the way they expected and Jason Hansen had played fullback for most of last season.

But what about the other running back spot, which had been filled by Manny Latimore for what seemed like forever?

"It was that other halfback position that I’m not even sure going into the season that I had one," O'Reilly said after Pinkerton play Concord in the Queen City Jamboree last Friday. "We sat T.J. out of our other two scrimmages with a mild ankle sprain because it was a scrimmage, but it also gave us an opportunity to try other halfbacks.

"What happened in those two scrimmages is that halfbacks appeared everywhere. Where I was concerned I didn't have one, now I've got four others."

And what could have potentially been a weakness for the Astros, who advanced to the Division I championship game last year for ninth time in 10 years, now looks like less of a question mark. Add that to what Pinkerton has back, and the Astros have to be a favorite to make at least another title game appearance.

"(Hanaway) is back at quarterback, our receivers are back and our line is bigger than ever," O'Reilly said. "It's just a matter of playing good scheme offense. We return two of our three linebackers. We've got our captains. Our secondary is a mix of veterans at three of four positions."

Hanaway showed against Concord that he can be a threat with his arm when needed, completing a 64-yard touchdown pass to Riley Cahill.

"Jack is a good quarterback," O'Reilly said. "If he has a problem, it’s he’s a runner. On at least one play action pass, I thought was wide open, but somebody got in his way, and it's like 'I'm running now.' That sometimes can be frustrating, but Jack, he turns those runs into breaks most of the time."

Pinkerton will get the season started Friday when it hosts Alvirne.
