Losing in the Division II girls soccer semifinals both years motivated them to become the players taking the pitch as senior captains this fall. The dynamic duo is leading the Hollis Brookline High School girls soccer team on another undefeated run, in hopes of hoisting the championship plaque for a second time in two years. Finishing 19-0 and winning the title in 2023 wasn’t enough. Just like their first two varsity seasons together, Maguire and Snoke want a repeat finish to their soccer season. “I feel like we’ve talked about this as a team,” Snoke said. “Winning that semifinal game in penalty kicks last year felt just as good as winning the whole thing because our sophomore year and freshman year we lost in the semifinals. So to break through that barrier the way we did was a special achievement for us.” Snoke’s co-captain agrees. “Getting back to the semifinals last year, I think we were all a little nervous,” said Maguire, who heading into Tuesday’s game was the Cavs leading scorer with 29 goals and 10 assists. “We all knew we’ve been in this spot before with two really good teams and didn’t get out of that round. We knew it was something we had to get past. To not only do that, but then to go on and win it all, was so good for all of us.” Sitting at 12-0 with four regular-season games remaining, the Cavs are well on their way to locking down the tournament’s top seed. That’s just the first piece though. These HB captains are motivated to complete this puzzle. “Our team is a close one,” Snoke said. “We’re all on the same page. This is important to us as seniors in our last year, but it’s just as important for the juniors, sophomores and freshman. We all want this. We all want another undefeated season. We all want another championship. “And for us to win again would be the perfect way to end our high school soccer careers.” Entering the 2024 season, the Cavs were no longer the underdog. They were and are currently the top dog that every opponent is trying to tame. What a difference a year makes. Of course, it was one of the best seasons in HB girls soccer history, and all but one starter returned for the blue, black and white. The loss of senior captain Lauren Holt to graduation after last year was a big one, but not one that a roster full of returning starters couldn’t handle. It was onward and upward for the Cavs in their quest to repeat. Head coach Peter Clarke, who has been coaching at HB since 2006 and became head coach in 2011, wasn’t concerned about the talent he had returning. Physically this HB squad is among the best he’s ever coached. Heading into this fall, he knew it would be more about his players’ mental toughness in how they handle being the one team everyone is trying to take down. “It was a little bit of a challenge, how to manage that after last year, after going unbeaten,” Clarke said. “I just told them it’s not just a brand new season, because that wouldn’t be authentic. We’re at 19-0, it’s a continuous process, and there wasn’t much of a change. "So our challenge will have to be that, every single night, we’re going to have to go out there and bring our best. Every single team knows who we are, and they’re all going to come in and they’re all probably going to give us their best game of the year. No matter who they are. And that is pretty much what we’ve been seeing all season.” HB just wrapped up the toughest part of its schedule this past week, recording a 6-0 win over previously undefeated Coe-Brown Northwood (9-1-2) in a rematch of the 2023 final on Oct. 8, and then winning a 2023 semifinal rematch 4-1 over Bow (9-3-1) on Oct. 11\. These are the top three teams in D2 at the moment. Clarke’s preseason challenge to stay focused and locked in for every game seems to be working thus far. “They’ve embraced it,” Clarke said of his team. “We pretty much returned in stride. It’s can we get better, not settle, and keep the run going. They haven’t let it go to their head, and they haven’t gotten complacent. They’re just working hard to improve every week, every day, as the season progresses. "Frankly, this week against Coe-Brown was the best we’ve ever looked to this point. There are still games ahead and more opportunities to improve and ultimately reach every goal we’ve set for ourselves this fall.” HB has a balanced offense led by Maguire, who recorded the 100th goal of her career a week ago, along with Rosalie DeSantis (12 goals, 5 assists), Marleigh Kreick (7 goals, 7 assists) and Lilly Bouchard (7 goals, 9 assists). Also, it doesn’t hurt to have sophomore keeper Maya Blackman in net. As a freshman she recorded two big saves during that PK semifinal victory over Bow last fall. The Cavs are in a good place as they prepare to close out the regular season with four games that include two against a pair of one-win teams. HB hosts Kingswood (4-3-6) on Oct. 15, travel to Pelham (1-9-2) on Oct. 18, host Laconia (1-11) on Oct. 22, and wrap up with a trip to Peterborough on Oct. 24 to face ConVal (6-3-3). Then it’s on to the tournament. If the Cavs can accomplish their goal of becoming back-to-back champions, they will match HB’s only other girls soccer title teams, that secured consecutive crowns in 2000 and 2001 while playing in Class M. Prior to 2023, those were the only titles in program history despite three more consecutive trips to the Class I final in 2007-09 that all ended in 1-0 losses. “To maintain the pace not only physically but psychologically was the key coming into this season,” Clarke said. “This is a very smart team tactically. I mean when presented with a problem they will figure it out on the field. I challenged them to be really cognizant of the opportunities that will present themselves differently every night, so we don’t just rest and wait for good things to happen. We really want to try and solve the riddles.” So far HB has solved 12 riddles correctly in 2024\. That makes 31 straight, counting last year. There’s still seven more to solve in order to claim the ultimate prize once more.
