Sean Holland may be entering his third season as the starting quarterback for the Nashua High School South football team, but Panthers coach Scott Knight is more impressed by another number.

That number is 10, as in this fall will be the 10th season out of 10 that Holland will be competing in a high school sport.

As a freshman, Holland saw action with the varsity football team and played a big role on the varsity boys lacrosse team, while also playing basketball in between. His roles with all three expanded as a sophomore, and last year, as a junior, he started on the varsity for all three.

"You take a kid like Sean, he plays three sports, he's on his 10th season," Knight said. "We're talking a lot of competition and he's been in a lot of contests. I'm a big proponent of three-sport athletes, just for the competition.

"Let's say you're a pitcher and it's a 3-2 count. You can't imitate that. Or what if you're at the foul line in a big game and the stands are full. You can't replicate that on a practice field. Those are emotions you go through in games."

While playing three sports is important to Holland, it's been so because of the friendships he's made in each sport as much as anything else.

"It's important because I love doing it," he said. "I have a lot of great friends because of it, so it's always been fun (to play three sports). I think there are aspects in each sport that you can use in others. In football, you're physically getting stronger, you're lifting weights, so when basketball comes around, you can rebound and stuff. In lacrosse, you have to move, you have to cut, and that translates to football as well."

While he knows that if he wants to play one of those sports at the next level he will likely have to drop the other two, Holland is looking forward to his last high school year playing all three.

"When basketball comes around, I'm looking forward to that and same with lacrosse," he said. "And now football, I'm looking forward to that.

"I'd say football is my No. 1 right now. I'm looking to play in college, definitely. If another sport comes with it, if it's a great situation, it happens."
