Snap Shot: Bedford football's comeback still seems improbable to Robert

It's been over eight months since Conor Robert led the Bedford High School football team on the drive that helped propel the Bulldogs into the Division I championship game.

But still, there are times the senior quarterback thinks about it and has a hard time believing it actually happened.

"It was unbelievable," Robert said. "The only thing I remember vividly was one of my senior friends, who I've been friends with forever, I said 'you get the offense the ball, we'll get us this game.' Sure enough, they make a stop, and I was like this is real."

Down for the entire semifinal against Merrimack, Robert helped lead Bedford on a 78-yard drive, tying the game at 20 on a 5-yard touchdown pass to Noah Chaberek on an untimed down after the Tomahawks had been called for pass interference.

Robert found Chaberek again on the first play of overtime and the Bulldogs' defense held for a 27-20 win, and Bedford followed it up with a 7-0 win over Exeter the following week to win the program's first title.

"That drive is going to stick out and it's probably one of the best times he's ever played football," Bedford coach Derek Stank said. "At the end of the day, that drive happened because we have done two-minute situations three times a week for the entire year. We'd been in that situation before in our head in practice situations. We've gone through that experience. For him to execute it to that degree, it was something where it's going to be a lasting memory."

Although Bedford had struggled to move the ball all game, Robert felt like the Bulldogs could still complete the comeback late in the game.

"We just ran the plays as well as possible," he said. "I've always been taught to never give up. Never think that something is lost. It's never over. That was going through my head."
