AMHERST – Caleb Paterson wanted to see a better performance from his Portsmouth High School boys soccer team in the second half of Monday’s game against Souhegan.

It took the Clippers just three minutes to give their coach what he wanted.

Not long after the teams returned from halftime, Portsmouth goalie Thomas Adler helped stop a scoring chance by the Sabers and got the ball out to midfield. The ball took a big bounce and was collected by Kyle Siverts, who beat two defenders and put a shot just out of the reach of Souhegan goalie Trevor Brown.

Souhegan's Mike Hayden and Portsmouth's Carter Madden go after the ball during Monday's game.

The goal broke a 1-1 tie with 37 minutes left in the game, and Siverts added another tally late, as the Clippers knocked off the Sabers 3-1 in Division II action.

“The second 40 (minutes) at the end was more enjoyable,” Paterson said. “We started to play. I thought we kept more possession through the midfield with Jackson Luff and Cooper Valinski. They settled down the game in the second half to our advantage.”

Portsmouth (3-1-1) also got a goal from Anthony March, which gave the Clippers a 1-0 lead with 13:06 left in the first half. Valinski and Tucker Addison each had an assist for Portsmouth.

Mike Hayden had the only goal for Souhegan (3-3), answering March’s score with 7:41 left in the first half. Devan Casey got an assist and Brown finished the game with eight saves, including a handful of big plays in the first half that kept the Clippers off the board.

“We had our chances and their goalie came up with big saves,” Paterson said. “We had some corners, some free kicks, which we can do better on, but their goalie squashed a couple of plays. Sometimes you get them, sometimes you don’t.”

The Sabers had some chances of their own in the first half, including a shot each by Hayden and Jack Facey that went wide to the far side of Adler.

“We came out nicely, as opposed to the last game, where we didn’t,” Souhegan coach Dave Saxe said. “We were working on trying to fix that and we did. We were trying to move the ball around and play nice soccer. Portsmouth plays nice soccer, too. I was happy at halftime to be 1-1.

“Second half, we made a couple of not-so-good mistakes that led to their first goal. It seemed like to me some basic, one-on-one defending mistakes. We’ve certainly got to clean that up if we’re going to continue to play at the top level.”

Saxe hopes that what happened on Siverts’ game-winning goal is something the Sabers can use as a learning experience.

“We can’t make mistakes against good teams,” he said of what the team talked about after the game. “We have to bring our ‘A’ game all the time. Technically, we have to be good. Tactically, we have to be sound. Everybody has to be making the right decisions. There were too many mistakes, both technical and decision-making, two of which led to the goal.”

Souhegan pressed at the end to try to get the game-tying goal, moving an extra player up, and that created an opening for Portsmouth. Addison was able to create a turnover in the Sabers’ end and found Siverts in front of the goal for his second tally.

Both teams are off for a few days, as Souhegan will host Manchester West on Friday and Portsmouth will travel to face unbeaten Hollis Brookline on Saturday.
