MANCHESTER - Slow starts have been normal for the Bishop Brady-Trinity-West girls hockey team for the last few weeks.

Fortunately for the Giant Pioneer Knights, goalie Emily Senko was at the top of her game in Tuesday's playoff game against Pinkerton.

After allowing an early goal, Senko turned away everything the Astros threw at her and No. 6 Brinity-West woke up in the third period to put away No. 11 Pinkerton 5-1 in a Division I preliminary-round game at JFK Coliseum in Manchester.

Courtney Ineham scored both of her goals in a span of 2:22 to open the third period and also assisted on a first-period goal by Laura Trippiedi, as Brinity-West (12-7) scored three times in the first 6:04 of the final frame to create some breathing room. Chevy Irizarri also had a goal and two assists and Riley Hollenberg added a goal.

"We didn’t have that game wrapped up," Brinity-West coach Dan Earley said. "We had to work hard. We got this far because we have resiliency and we have the talent when we can get it together. It’s always about the intensity we come out with and I’ve been trying different things to get that at the beginning of the game. We classically came out flat."

Senko was there to pick her teammates up when Pinkerton (6-10) came out firing early. The Astros scored first on a goal by Jordyn Wasiejko, when her shot deflected off Senko and hit the top far corner of the net, giving Pinkerton a 1-0 lead 3:21 into the game.

"The first thing she says in the locker room is that was all me," Earley said. "She’s great like that. When we ask her if there’s anything she wants the defense to do, she says no. She’s great about taking responsibility and she’s only a sophomore. She really has held us together."

Pinkerton had a number of chances in the first period, but Senko was there to stop each one.

"It was just to stay calm and focus on what I knew I could do and what I’ve been doing all season," the sophomore said. "The first goal threw me off a little bit, because in my opinion, it was a goal I thought I should have had. After that, my process was just trying to get that out of my mind, relax and just focus on the next shot. After every shot, focus on the next one."

Trippiedi tied the game with 7:32 left in the first when her high shot from the blue line beat Pinkerton goalie Alexis Skafus (15 saves), and Irizarri made it 2-1 1:34 into the second period.

"They gave their heart," Pinkerton coach Scott Dunn said. "For two periods, we were with them the entire time. We made a couple of mistakes in the third period early on. Compared to where we were when we saw them earlier in the year, it’s a huge difference."

Pinkerton, which made the playoffs in its first season as a varsity program, started the year with a 7-2 loss to Brinity-West. Despite the loss, Dunn felt the Astros accomplished a lot in the first year that they can build off.

"One of the things we said was to get better as a team working together," he said. "We wanted to get the new players to the point where they see more ice time during the game.

"One of the last things we talked about was that we wanted to make the playoffs. Let’s check that box. We checked every box and talked about what we wanted to do to be successful. We made the playoffs and I have a sneaking suspicion that we’re going to see the playoffs a lot over the next few years."

Ineham made it a 3-1 lead 2:20 into the third period and then gave Brinity-West a three-goal lead with 10:18 to play. Hollenberg knocked a rebound past Skafus with 8:56 to play to finish out the scoring.

Brinity-West moves on to face No. 3 Concord in the quarterfinals on Friday at Everett Arena.

"We’re very excited because it’s our arch rival and it was our home rink for many years," Earley said. "Thrilled to be going back to play them. They beat us the first time. I feel like we were pretty close. It should be a great game."
