There was something about this year's seniors that Scott Knight noticed during their freshmen year playing football at Nashua High School South that set them apart from other classes.

Every chance they had, the players would form a pickup game of football.

"What I remember about them, we used to laugh, because every where we looked, if it was between practice, or before a varsity game, anywhere there was a patch of grass, they’d have a pickup football game," Knight said. "In the winter, they’d be out in the snow.

"One time, they couldn’t use a field, they were over at the Y. They found a patch of grass. They’ve always been really tight. We wondered how they’d be as seniors, and here they are, they’re still here and they’re really tight."

After a couple of years of small groups of seniors, this year's class is almost at 20, and has given the Panthers the kind of boost they needed.

They've been through the ups and downs together on the field, winning just two games as sophomores in 2015, only to follow that up with a playoff berth last year.

"The last bunch of years, we have not had big senior classes," Knight said. "We have not had kids stay with it. This is a group, this senior group, it’s a little bigger than usual, and a lot of them have played a lot of football. The real difference this year, we’ve also got a junior class that’s played a lot of football. Those guys collectively put a good winter in."

When a team has a lot of returning players like South does, expectations can get high. While Knight wants the players to have lofty goals for this season, he doesn't want it to become a distraction, and he made that known on Wednesday.

"We’re trying to keep everything in check," the coach said. "Our thing this year is to block out the noise. I don’t want to talk about expectation. You want to have them, but you don’t want to talk about it. I’m not getting wrapped up in any of that."
