It was not only the Sabers' senior night, but also their third game in three days and fourth of the week, and they were without one of their leading scorers. Oh, and one other thing - the Lancers are really good. Souhegan managed to go on a run in the second quarter that gave the Sabers just enough separation to hold off Londonderry late for an 8-6 win in a Division I game at Calvetti Field. “Londonderry is no joke,” Sbordone said. “They’re physical, they have a lot of skill. I am so proud of how the girls played. It was our senior night, so there’s a lot of distractions, but we came out hard. “With the matchups we’ve seen this week, I’m really glad that we’re being tested this late in the season, as we go into the playoffs. It’s giving us opportunities to do a lot of situational things.” After wins over Windham and Andover (Mass.) earlier in the week, Souhegan (13-1, No. 2 in the New Hampshire Orthopaedic Center/NHHSSports Coaches Poll) had a battle with Bishop Guertin on Thursday that the Sabers won 8-7, but saw junior Izzy Stevenson leave with an injury that kept her out of Friday's game. In her abscence, Meredith Heimark stepped up and led Souhegan with three goals against Londonderry, while Libby Kennedy and Lanai Hickman added two goals apiece. Averie Curran had a goal and an assist as well for the Sabers. “We didn’t have one of our main starters, and it gave an opportunity for other girls to step up,” Sbordone said. “Meredith Heimark played a great game and had some big goals. Our ride was fantastic. We did a lot of different things defensively, just try out different things.” Heimark scored 56 seconds into the second quarter, off an assist from Curran, to break a 2-2 tie, and also had a goal with 8:25 remaining in the game to put the Sabers up by three, 8-5. Souhegan would have more if not for Londonderry goalie Abby Cook, who finished with 11 saves, including a couple when the Lancers (8-6, No. 7) needed them. “She was standing on her head,” Londonderry coach Kelsey Derhak said of Cook. “She was seeing the ball really well and she really did an outstanding job. Even more than that, she was communicating with her defense and really was able to get those low-angle shots. She’s been working really hard.” The Lancers also got two goals apiece from Eres Delorey and Annabelle Melia while Molly Connors and Cora Rogers had a goal apiece. Melia tied the game at 2 on a goal with 2:39 remaining in the first quarter, but Heimark and Hickman scored back-to-back goals just 28 seconds apart to open the second and give Souhegan a 4-2 lead. Hickman added another goal with 4:34 to go in the half to give Souhegan it's largest lead, but Connors answered right back off the draw to make it 5-3\. After the teams went back and forth on the field, Kennedy scored with 46 seconds to go before halftime for a 6-3 Sabers lead. That's where things stood until late in the third quarter, when the teams traded goals in the final four minutes to make it 7-4 Souhegan going to the fourth. The Sabers won the draw to open the final quarter, but a save by Cook helped set up a possession for the Lancers that ended up with a free-position opportunity for Lily Ciarametaro. Her shot was stopped by Molly Benson, but the rebound went right to Rogers, who fired a shot into the net to make it 7-5 with 9:35 to play. Londonderry won the ensuing draw, but turned the ball over, and Souhegan capitlized on a goal by Heimark just 1:10 later to restore the three-goal lead. Delorey added a goal with 20 seconds left, but the Lancers ran out of time to try to get closer. “I thought we played really well going against the No. 2 team in the state right now,” Derhak said. “We made a couple of mistakes that kind of shot us in the foot, but I think we can just keep working on those and hopefully get another chance to battle again. I think we’re right there.”
