BEDFORD - For 12 minutes Thursday, it looked like the Bishop Guertin and Bedford high school boys lacrosse teams might combine for a couple dozen goals.

And then, for the next eight minutes, it looked like the Cardinals might do that on their own.

Bishop Guertin went on a 6-0 run over the opening two-thirds of the second quarter to build up a lead that Bedford couldn't overcome, and after the Bulldogs crept back in in the second half, the Cardinals put the game away for a 17-11 win in rematch of last year's Division I championship game.

It's the 69th win in a row against in-state opponents for Bishop Guertin (5-1, No. 1 in the MerchSquared.com/NHHSSports Coaches Poll) and the ninth time the Cardinals have beaten the Bulldogs (4-3, No. 2) during that streak.

Owen King scored five goals and had two assists and Sean McGarry had four goals and an assist to lead Bishop Guertin. Beau Dubois added three goals while Cam Hayden and Michael Ponto had two goals apiece and Jack Redfern also had a goal.

But perhaps the two key players for the Cardinals didn't score at all, as Paulo Vazquez finished the day winning 21 of 31 faceoffs, while goalie Jonah Feliciano overcame a tough start to finish with nine saves.

"It starts with Paulo and I think Jonah played his best game of the year," Bishop Guertin coach Brian Cameron said. "Then I think we moved the ball and worked for good shots. I’ve been telling the guys we’re too good to take bad shots. We worked the ball, we had success there, but that’s a really good team that we’re going to see again."

Bennett Matthews (two assists) and Brody Helton (one) each had three goals for Bedford, which matched Bishop Guertin goal for goal in the first quarter and trailed 6-5 after one. The Bulldogs were able to get within three scored with 5:04 remaining, but the Cardinals ended the game with a 3-0 to close it out.

John Purnell and Luke Purnell each had a goal and an assist while Evan Capello and Bryce D'Urso had a goal apiece. Ethan Conn made 20 saves to keep Bedford in the game.

"In the first quarter, we had so much energy, and we just made mistakes in that second quarter," Bedford coach Steve Gaudreau said. "We felt deflated. When you’re playing good teams, you can’t string multiple mistakes in a row, or you can’t let teams make multiple plays in a row. I was proud of the way we battled back."

Bishop Guertin scored just five seconds into the second quarter to make it a 7-5 game, and that's where it stood until a manup goal by Hayden with 7:38 to play until halftime made it a three-goal game. Four more goals in under four minutes for the Cardinals made it 12-5 with 3:58 left in the half.

"There’s a lot of different types of adversity that you have to face when you play this game," Gaudreau said. "We had to face some there to start the second quarter. Then we were mandown. When you’re giving a team like that the ball, it’s tough to battle back.

"At the end of the day, it was mistakes and our energy level, and I think once we realized everything was going to be OK, we settled down. We liked our matchups, we liked our game plan, we had to get back to it."

Bedford got two goals back before halftime, and after each side scored to open the third, the Bulldogs got a break when a Cardinals' goal was waved off for a crease violation.

Matthews scored on the manup to make it 13-9 with 4:49 to go in the third, as Bedford's defense held Bishop Guertin scoreless for more than 13 minutes. But King ended the drought with 9:16 to play, and although to more goals from Helton cut the lead to three, the Cardinals were able to close it out.

"It showed a lot of mental toughness," Cameron said of surviving the scoreless stretch. "Jonah made three or four key saves. Down the stretch, taking good shots and being patient with the ball, I think we did that."
