NASHUA - Kerry Gobiel gathered her Bishop Guertin High School girls lacrosse team together during a timeout in the second half of Thursday's game and had a clear message.

It may be the first week of the season - and the second game of the year - but the Cardinals were facing their first test against Chelmsford (Mass.). While Bishop Guertin held a two-goal lead, it had gone more than 13 minutes without a goal and some frustration seemed to be settling in for the Cardinals.

The pep talk worked, as Bishop Guertin scored three goals in less than a minute out of the timeout, giving the Cardinals some breathing room, as they held on for an 11-6 win over the Lions at Stellos Stadium.

"We weren’t producing," Gobiel said. "I think that they knew what this game meant, that this was our first big test. I said you have to play like this is a championship for those of you who have been there, and act like it. I think the biggest thing is that we have to change our tone now and everyone on this field needs to make an adjustment."

Madison Keating scored on a free position coming out of the timeout to make it an 8-5 lead for the Cardinals (2-0), and the goal and celebration seemed to fire up her teammates. Bishop Guertin won the ensuing draw, went down the field, and scored off another free position, as Amelia Piercy found the back of the net.

The Cardinals got the draw again and scored 16 seconds later to go up 10-5 and momentum was shifted back their way.

"They’re a great team and they’re coming off a championship," Chelmsford coach Ashley Rokas said. "We knew we had to come in and play our hearts out. Our midfielders were running full field all game, and it was warmer than it’s been all season, so it’s tough to get used to that, too. We have to play better."

Rylee Bouvier led Bishop Guertin with three goals while Piercy had two goals and an assist. Emily Santom and Claire Donovan each had two goals for the Cardinals while Keating also scored and Natalie Coutu had two assists.

Chelmsford got four goals from Katie Krueger while Claire Danahy had two goals.

The Lions had a 2-1 edge early in the first half, but the Cardinals went on a 6-0 run, taking a 7-2 lead on a goal by Santom with 3:09 to go before halftime.

"We had too many turnovers and once you do that, people start to panic," Rokas said of the turnaround. "People weren’t playing where they’re used to playing. There were too many turnovers for us to keep up on our end."

Krueger scored twice in the final 2:38 of the half to get Chelmsford within three goals at halftime and the sophomore scored again a little more than five minutes into the second half to cut Bishop Guertin's lead to 7-5\. Lions goalie Morgan Wright made a couple of saves on the Cardinals after that, and with 16:41 to play, Coutu picked up a yellow card, leaving Bishop Guertin shorthanded for two minutes.

Chelmsford turned the ball over with time left on the penalty and Gobiel called the timeout to try to right the ship.

"It’s just good energy," the coach said of how the Cardinals bounced back. "From the kids, from the sideline, and people taking coaching and being able to act on what we’re saying. We had some good defensive stops. Offense really did a great job pushing the fast break. And when we switched the draw up, that was key."
