BOW – Treshawn Rey believed that the Belmont High School boys basketball team was ready to handle a big stage.

The junior and his teammates then went out and showed just how prepared they were, and now, the Red Raiders have an opportunity to make history on the biggest stage.

Rey and Keegan Martinez helped spark a second-half comeback that saw top-seeded Belmont overcome a nine-point deficit at halftime and run away with a 69-53 win Wednesday night over No. 5 St. Thomas in the Division III semifinals at Bow High School.

The win puts Belmont (19-1) in a title game for just the fourth time in program history, and the first since 1970\. The Red Raiders will be looking for their first championship at 4 p.m. Saturday at Keene State College when they take on No. 3 Kearsarge, which advanced with a 52-33 win over No. 2 Mascoma Valley.

"We’ve been playing in big games, crowds going crazy," Rey said. "We play as a team, and at the end of the day, if you play as a team, it doesn’t matter about anything else. We’ve got Saturday and we’ll gear up and go back to practice (Thursday) like nothing happened."

Rey finished with 22 points while Martinez finished with 23 points, as the pair combined to score all 13 points for Belmont on a 13-3 run to end the third quarter.

That run turned a 38-32 deficit into a 45-41 lead, ending with a buzzer-beating 3-pointer by Rey that gave the Red Raiders all the momentum.

"The key was knowing that we’re a good team and staying with that confidence," Belmont coach Tony Martinez said. "Just coming out and knowing that basketball is a game of runs. They had a great run on us in the second quarter, but we hadn’t had one yet.

"Once we decided to be a little more patient and value our possessions on offense, we started executing. Our rebounding started picking up. The buzzer beater is just momentum. We felt confident (at halftime). We have 16 minutes to go, two eight-minute games. If you take it one possession at a time, we’ll be fine."

Anakin Underhill added 12 points for Belmont and Brody Ennis finished with eight points.

Cole McClure had a game-high 34 points, including four 3-pointers and was 8 of 10 at the free throw line, for St. Thomas (15-4). Anthony Settineri added 11 points with three 3s, but the Saints scored just 15 points over the final 12 minutes of the game.

The game was back and forth for most of the first half, with four leads changes and five ties, but after scoring just two points in the first quarter, McClure took over in the second.

The sophomore had 16 points in the frame, helping St. Thomas end the half on a 10-1 run over the final two minutes for a 33-24 lead at halftime.

"He's the type of player that, any time the ball is in his hands, you know there’s a chance he’s going to score," Tony Martinez said of McClure. "All season long I’ve been using the analogy of a boxing match. You don’t come out and throw haymakers right away in the first round, you jab. I think our guys were feeling it out and kind of jabbing a little bit."

In the third quarter, Belmont started to find ways to get the ball down low to Keegan Martinez and get Rey going in transition.

"Down nine, we were saying we’ve been down bigger before," Keegan Martinez said. "We’ve just got to come out and play hard and we’ll win this."

McClure hit a 3 to give St. Thomas a 36-30, and after two free throws by Rey, he hit another jumper to make it 38-32\. But after that, Keegan Martinez scored eight straight points in the paint for the Red Raiders to tie the game at 40 with just over a minute left in the third.

After a long possession by the Saints, Rey stole the ball and went in for a layup to give Belmont the lead. McClure was fouled with 2.4 seconds left and made the second free throw, leaving Rey just enough time to get over halfcourt and heave up a shot before the buzzer.

The Red Raiders celebrated to start the final quarter break and then brough the momentum to the floor, going up by 10 points on a 3 by Underhill midway through the fourth.

"When we went into that second half, we came down here (to the locker room) and looked at each other and said ‘we came too far,’" Rey said. "We came too far to let anything get in the way. We went up there and did what we had to do."
