NASHUA - The Goffstown High School boys lacrosse team finished off a season of firsts in 2013.

Under first-year head coach Josh Lewis, the Grizzlies made it past the quarterfinals for the first time, defeated St. Thomas for the first time (in the semifinals) and reached the Division II championship game for the first time. Goffstown's run ended there in a 16-2 loss to Bedford, but that late-season run has helped motivate the Grizzlies heading into this season.

"These are great kids," Lewis said after his team was done its scrimmages at Saturday's preseason jamboree in Nashua. "They're working hard and they're getting prepared. It was a hard loss (to Bedford) for the boys. We've learned from it and they've worked hard in the offseason.

"The kids have been hitting the gym and the camps. They've been doing all sorts of stuff. Kids who have been a little lazy, other kids on the team have been like 'no, you're coming with us and going for a run.' They're holding each other accountable."

On Saturday, the Grizzlies got to face three Division I teams in Concord, Nashua South and Bishop Guertin. Knowing that Bedford had just scrimmaged Bishop Guertin earlier in the week, Goffstown was eager to see how it would do against the Cardinals.

"Playing BG (Saturday), I think we realized we can run with them and it’s going to be a different team against Bedford than last year and in years past," Lewis said. "It was huge for us. I was stoked for it and the boys couldn't wait to get out here and play some of the best in Division I. We’re covering the mistakes we had last year and learning from them."

Goffstown gets another Division I team on Thursday, when the Grizzlies return to Stellos Stadium to scrimmage Nashua North. The Grizzlies open their season with home games against Keene (April 15) and Bedford (April 21).
