NASHUA - There were a few different things happening Monday for the Salem High School field hockey team.

First game of a new season and the Blue Devils were playing on turf for just the second time this year, and at various points in the game against Nashua North, players were being shuffled around the lineup.

But the biggest difference for Salem was on the sideline. With longtime coach John Gatsas retired, Mikayla Ramsdell was coaching her first game for the Blue Devils, and they made sure it was a memorable one.

Avery Aliberti scored two goals in the second half and the Salem defense, led by goalie Lyndsay Triosi, kept North off the board for a 3-0 win in the Division I season opener for both teams at Stellos Stadium.

Heather Lee O'Rourke also had a goal for the Blue Devils and Emily Young added an assist. Triosi finished with four saves while Molly Mosto also had a sprawling save to keep the Titans from ending the shutout in the final minutes.

"I think they played really, really well," Ramsdell said. "We had one scrimmage on turf, so it was really good to see the adjustments that they made and use the sidelines, transitioning the ball and making strong passes.

"I think they were doing really well on the corners, too. They were capitalizing on those well, so I was like ‘I want another one’ every single time."

Salem finished the game with 10 penalty corners, with O'Rourke giving the Blue Devils a 1-0 lead off the first one with 5:53 to go in the first quarter. But they'd have five more in the first half and couldn't get another past Titans' goalie Abby O'Malley, who finished with nine saves.

North was able to swing momentum late in the half, getting pressure on Salem's defense, but the Titans finished the game without an offensive corner.

Aliberti made it 2-0 off a corner with 9:29 remaining in the third quarter, giving Salem back some momentum. Moments later, Triosi came up with a key defensive play to keep it a two-goal lead.

With North's Alexa Farrell come in on a breakaway, Triosi came out and was able to kick the ball away to thwart the attempt.

"When the ball did come down, Lyndsay was doing a tremendous job" Ramsdell said. "Not just getting her feet on the ball, but making sure she was clearing that ball hard and wide. Then, for the one she missed, for Molly Mosto to step in and lay herself out on the ground to get a defensive save was incredible. Never seen anything like it.

"(Triosi) is absolutely incredible. She’s a wall back there and I’m really looking forward to seeing what she can do this season."

Aliberti scored her second goal with 12:29 remaining and play went back and forth in the midfield for the remainder of the game, until the final moments.

North's Jordin Lopez got the ball on the left side of the cage, but with Triosi in position for any shot attempt, she sent a pass across toward Rachel Riddell. Mosto dove and was able to get her stick on the ball, breaking up the play, and Triosi cleared it out of the circle.

Moments later, the final buzzer sounded, wrapping up Ramsdell's first win as a head coach.
