The Souhegan High School football team scored 41 points and totaled 377 yards in last week’s win over Goffstown.

And it could have been worse.

The Sabers had three touchdowns called back on penalties, and that is what coach Mike Beliveau had at the top of his list following the game.

“I’m glad we won the game, but we need to play better,” he said. “We need to try to correct those mistakes or they could cost us down the road.”

The win over the Grizzlies was the first the Sabers (2-0 in Division III, 3-0 overall) had played at home since last Thanksgiving, and Beliveau is glad to have to more in a row in Amherst.

“It was great to play in front of a home crowd,” Beliveau said. “It was a long time coming. It’s nice to have a stretch of three in a row and it’s not an easy stretch.”

Souhegan will host Hollis/Brookline (1-0, 1-1) on Friday at 7 p.m.

The Cavaliers are coming off a 34-0 win over Pembroke. That, combined with H/B’s 28-14 loss to Merrimack in the first week of the season, has Beliveau thinking the Cavs are coming in with a lot of confidence.

“They have to come out feeling good about themselves,” Beliveau said. “They fly around on defense, and they took that momentum into Pembroke and had a dominating performance.”

As much as H/B’s defense concerns Beliveau, it’s the Cavs offense that could present the biggest problem for Souhegan

Against Pembroke, H/B rushed for 261 yards, putting together drives that ate up a lot of the clock.

“They’ll look to control the clock and keep our offense on sidelines,” Beliveau said. “A couple of years ago, that was their approach and it worked for most of the first half. They have some kids that run real tough in Brian Liamos, Colin Pellerin and Taylor Landry. Those three grind for extra yards.”

Souhegan has shown it can move the ball through the air or on the ground. After setting single-game passing records in a win over Portsmouth, quarterback Mike Luks followed it up with a three-touchdown performance against Goffstown. Running back Nick Calvetti added 130 yards on the ground.

But what the Sabers do on offense could rest on what their defense is able to accomplish.

“We try to be a big-play team and I think that becomes difficult if teams keep you on the sideline,” Beliveau said. “You go from 12 or 14 possessions to almost half that because the other team is killing the clock. H/B is looking to not get into a shootout.”

The Sabers and Cavs meet on Friday at 7 p.m. in Amherst.
