Sabers too much for Spartans

AMHERST – The Milford High School girls basketball team has proven that when it can make its shots, it can play with anyone, even teams like Souhegan.

But when the Spartans don’t, they end up with results like Friday’s 58-36 loss to the Sabers.

Milford fell behind early, but cut the lead to four in the second quarter, as the Spartans’ shots started to fall and Souhegan’s missed their mark. But the Sabers regrouped and outscored Milford 20-4 in the third quarter to put the game away. The loss was the 10^th straight for the Spartans

Jane White led Souhegan (9-0 in Division II) with 16 points while Christan Wojtas had 12 points and Ashley Tighe added 10.

Milford (1-10) got 15 points from Dina Pitsas, but no one else had more than six for the Spartans.

Souhegan got out to an 11-1 lead and was up by 12 going into the second quarter. The Sabers made it 20-6 on a jumper by Ceara McNamara, but Milford answered with a 10-0 run behind two layups by Pitsas and 3-pointers by Kelsey Landry and Taylor Sacco.

But after Milford made it 22-18 on a field goal by Ashley Federico, Souhegan closed the half on an 8-2 run to lead 30-20 at the break.

The Sabers broke the game open at the start of the third, going on a 14-3 run to push the lead to 21 points. White and Wojats each had a 3 during the run while Tighe and Mickenze Larivee also had baskets.

Milford didn’t get its first field goal of the second half until six minutes remained in the game, and by then, the Spartans trailed by 29.

Both teams are scheduled to have busy weeks. Milford plays three road games in three days, going to John Stark on Monday, Bedford on Tuesday and Sanborn on Wednesday before returning home to face Con-Val Friday. Souhegan travels to Oyster River on Tuesday before hosting Portsmouth on Wednesday and Windham on Friday.
