Sabers need extra innings to top Knights

The Souhegan High School baseball team scored four runs in the top of the ninth and held on to defeat Kingswood 5-2 in a Class I game played at MerchantsAuto.com Stadium in Manchester.

The win was the ninth in a row for the Sabers, who are one of three remaining undefeated teams in Class I, with Portsmouth and Lebanon.

Terry Dugdale pitched eight innings for Souhegan, allowing three hits and no earned runs while striking out 11. Robby McCormick pitched the ninth inning, striking out two, to earn the save.

McCormick also started the Sabers' ninth-inning rally with a one-out single. Chris Chininis followed with a single, and a passed ball moved the runners to second and third. Tim Beliveau drove them in with a single to right and Souhegan added two more insurance runs.

Tim Campbell opened the bottom of the ninth for Kingswood by striking out, but when strike three got away, he reached first safely. After another strikeout, the Knights loaded the bases and got a run home on a wild pitch.

McCormick got another strikeout, and induced a grounder to Beliveau at first to end the game.

Alex Lyon finished the game with three hits for Souhegan and drove in the Sabers' first run of the game.
