The Sabers dropped a 2-0 decision to Merrimack Valley last Thursday, and the players were disappointed in their performance. The Bulldogs felt they had played well in their own 2-0 setback to Plymouth, also last Thursday, and were hoping to build on that. Souhegan got what it was looking for at Bedford’s expense. The Sabers scored three goals in each half and kept the Bulldogs off the board in a 6-0 win. Rachel Dobbs and Lindsey MacPhee each had two goals for Souhegan while Libby Bacher and Kaitlyn Dumais had a goal apiece. Ali Sagon also had an assist for the Sabers (2-1), who also got eight saves from goalie Morgan King. Bedford got four saves in the first half from Kim Barthelemy and Ashley Donahue had three saves in the second half. Stephanie Kuhn and Andrea Wilson also played well for the Bulldogs (0-3). With both teams coming off 2-0 losses last Thursday, both coaches were hoping to see certain things. “Coming back into today was a challenge and they knew that they needed to redeem themselves,” Souhegan coach Sarah Hooper-Barbato said. “They did that in a big way. They were where they needed to be, they played cleanly, it goes well to what we’ve been working on.” \[[Go here for more photos from this game.](http://nh-highschoolsports.smugmug.com/Sports/Bedford-Souhegan-field-hockey/13679566%5FPtZmY?ref=nh-highschoolsports.com#999090720%5FWxCK3)\] Bedford coach Jill Pearson wasn’t as satisfied by what she saw from the Bulldogs. “We definitely did not play the best that we can,” she said. “A little disappointing after Thursday’s game, where they showed great team work and great communication and great recovery. It’s easy for us to fall into thinking they scored a couple of goals, we’re not going to get back, when in fact they can do it. They have to make that decision for themselves.” The Bulldogs had opportunities to take the lead early. After Barthelemy made a big save three minutes into the game, Bedford had back-to-back corner chances. But on the first one, King came up with a save for the Sabers, and the Bulldogs couldn’t get a shot off on the second. Souhegan pushed play back to the other end of the field, and missed on its own corner before MacPhee scored at 19:26 of the first half off a second corner opportunity. The score stayed at 1-0 for the balance of the first, even though Souhegan five more corners in the half. “The game was really fast-paced at first, and then eventually, they slowed down a little and our girls didn’t,” Hooper-Barbato said. “We didn’t go there with them, which is hard. They kept pushing through. That’s a lot of what we talk about, not standing still. That’s a big factor. Once they’re tired, they spread out and are stationary. We’ve been working on getting to open space.” Dobbs made it 2-0, despite a great defensive effort from Bedford’s Stephanie Gilbert. With Barthelemy battling the Sabers a few feet in front of the goal, Gilbert slid in along the goal line and stopped a shot. The stand was short-lived, however, as Dobbs got the rebound through traffic. Souhegan kept the pressure on as time ticked down in the half, and Bacher made it 3-0 with five seconds left before the break. “We talked about that the last goal of the first half, you could see it five passes out,” Pearson said. “You could see they had time to set up and no one was moving on them. Bedford had a few more opportunities late in the game to get on the board, but the Bulldogs couldn’t convert. “We spent the last few games encouraging them,” Pearson said. “Now we need to stop and look at what’s not working and figure it out. If there’s a breakdown in motivation, we need to figure that out and fix it.” Souhegan is back on the field Friday when it hosts Hollis/Brookline, while Bedford is in action Saturday at home against Oyster River.
