EXETER - Kimble Rose hasn't always had the best of luck going one-on-one with a goalie.

But in Tuesday's Division III field hockey semifinal, the Bishop Brady High School sophomore knew she needed to change that.

With time ticking away in overtime, Rose took the ball away from a defender, giving her a couple of steps on her way to the goal, and beat Newport goalie Breanne Robertson to give the seventh-seeded Giants another upset in the tournament, as they took down No. 3 Newport 2-1 at Bill Ball Stadium in Exeter.

Bishop Brady will try to for its third D3 title in four years at 4 p.m. Sunday at Bedford High School, where the Giants will take on top-seeded and undefeated Gilford. The Golden Eagles advanced with a 3-2 win over No. 4 Mascenic in the other semifinal.

"Overtime has kind of been our thing for a little bit," Rose said. "I was able to slow down and grab (the ball) off her stick and keep going. I usually miss when I’m one-on-one with goalies, so I was a little nervous when I saw that I was. I was able to get up there fast enough and I got a shot off."

The goal with 1:17 left in overtime was the second of the game for Rose, who also scored with 5:24 remaining in the first quarter to give Bishop Brady (11-6) a 1-0 lead it would hold for almost three quarters. Carly Fuller had an assist on the goal and goalie Ava Archambault only had to make one save to help the Giants get the win.

Katie Sharron had the goal for Newport (13-3), as she scored on a penalty corner with 12:28 remaining in the game to tie it at 1\. The Tigers had 12 corners on the day, seven of them in the fourth quarter, but Bishop Brady's defense held up.

"It’s something we want to focus on," Bishop Brady coach Kelly Owen said of the defense. "You defend as 11 and attack as 10\. That’s super important. Everyone has a role on defense, not just the halfbacks and the sweep. We hardly had any possession in that last quarter. That was a little hairy."

Newport had scoring chances throughout, but struggled at times to get a shot off against the Bishop Brady defense, and when the Tigers did, they were unable to put it on goal. They almost tied it late in the third quarter on a corner, but a shot by Maddox Lovely was tipped just wide of the goal by Nevaeh Caron.

After Newport controlled play for most of the fourth quarter, both teams had chances to end it in overtime, as the Giants had a corner and the Tigers had two.

Moments before Rose's game-winner, it looked like Bishop Brady had a shot at a three-on-one, when a long hit rolled past everyone and came to a stop before the end line. Newport's Bella Osgood brought the ball back up, but Rose applied pressure and took the ball away, setting up her breakaway opportunity.

"I was confident in the seven I put in there in terms of being able to handle the overtime," Owen said. "We had a three-on-one and it died. I’m so happy for Kimble. She is a hard worker and she gives it her all. She delivered."

For the second year in a row, the Giants have played the role of spoiler throughout the postseason.

A year ago, Bishop Brady pulled off upsets in the quarterfinals and semifinals as the sixth seed before falling to No. 1 and undefeated Hopkinton in the final. This year, the Giants have done the same, beating No. 2 Newfound in the quarters and now the three seed in the semis, to face No. 1 and undefeated Gilford.

"It’s been pretty cool," Rose said. "Coach always says ‘why not us,’ so why not us? Keep fighting, keep our positivity up and to keep it going. I’m so excited. I’m ready to win this year."
