Bulldogs coach Zach Matthews liked what was staring back at him. “If you would have asked me last week do I think we’d be employing that many two tight end sets and running the ball as much as we did, I would not have envisioned it that way, no,” Matthews said. “But when you find something that’s working well, you stick with it. We were executing and it was working, so we stuck with it.” The Bulldogs (5-1) stuck it to Exeter (4-2) in true Blue Hawks’ style, rushing for 260 yards as a team. Colby Snow finished the night with 161 yards rushing and a touchdown on 18 carries to lead Bedford’s ground-and-pound attack. Two other Bulldogs running backs, Logan Sfeir (16 carries, 54 yards) and Dom Tagliaferro (three carries, 21 yards), found the end zone as well. Bedford’s defense did it’s part, shutting out Exeter in the second half to secure the win. Exeter held a 10-7 lead at the half courtesy of a 34-yard Ethan Moss field goal to end the second quarter, but the Blue Hawks, who were held under 150 yards of total offense, would go three-and-out twice and turn the ball over on an interception in their only three second half possessions. “That’s a statement win for this group and we’re feeling confident after being in some tough battles,” Matthews said. “We’ve gotten better each week we take the field and I still see room for improvement. I can see it in how this group practices and prepares. We’re hungry for more.” Bedford’s opening drive of the second half ate up all but two minutes of the third quarter, but failed to produce points as a 30-yard field goal attempt missed its mark. One of those Exeter three-and-outs followed the missed field goal and Bedford made it count with the eventual game-winning touchdown as Tagliaferro closed out an eight-play, 62-yard drive from 10 yards out for a 13-10 Bulldogs’ advantage. Tagliaferro would stand out defensively as well, pulling in the interception on Exeter’s last drive of the game to wrap things up. The Bulldogs opened the scoring on Snow’s 39-yard touchdown run with 5:50 to play in the first quarter. Exeter came right back to toe it up on an Evan Pafford-to-Moss connection for 26 yards. Bedford will need its defense to come up big again this week at Stellos Stadium against a high-powered Bishop Guertin offense. “I think the defense has been the strongest part of our team all season,” Matthew’s said of his unit that has recorded three shutouts this fall over Salem, Goffstown and Nashua South. “We’ve defended different styles all season - straight-T, double tight end and spread. Now it’s a spread that is majority run out of that set. BG is the next challenge we face.” ### Souhegan 28, Hanover 6 All is bright in Amherst heading into Week 7 of the season - literally. Souhegan used a 165-yard, one-touchdown rushing performance from JJ Bright, and three touchdown passes from Romy Jain to accomplish two things no other opponent had yet to do versus Hanover this fall - scoring more than 14 points and beating the Bears. The Sabers (6-0) did both in Friday night’s 28-6 home win over Division II foe Hanover (5-1). Souhegan keeps its undefeated record intact, as well as its defensive string of not allowing more than 14 points against this season. Only Pelham and Gilford-Belmont are the only Division II teams still undefeated through six weeks. Free safety Madux McGrath led the Sabers defense with 13 total tackles, while linebacker Sam Stevenson and defensive lineman Zachary Wyborney had strong games as well. Hanover’s offense suffered a major loss with roughly four minutes to play in the first half when junior quarterback Roger Lucas went down hard and was taken off the field on a stretcher. Souhegan’s offense, although not reaching its 50-point per game average, was firing on all cylinders. Jain hit Charlie Maroun for Souhegan’s first score from 44 yards out, found Brayden Hickman on fourth-and-goal from the 6 for the Sabers’ second score, and connected with Steven Reynolds on a 7-yard strike to close out the first drive of second half. Bright then finished out the scoring with a 13-yard trip to the end zone in the third quarter. Matt Brock scored Hanover’s only points on a 2-yard first half run.
