Queen City Football Jamboree Roundup: Milford runs past Manchester Central

Gavin Urda and the Milford High School football team ran up and down the field at Gill Stadium Friday night, scoring four times on the ground in a 28-7 win over Manchester Central in the Queen City Football Jamboree.

The Spartans senior quarterback had rushing touchdowns of 77, 50 and 45 yards, two of which came in the first quarter of the two-quarter scrimmage to give Milford a 14-7 lead. Matt Hannon added a 2-yard touchdown run on the first play of the second quarter.

Urda's 77-yard touchdown run came on the second play of the scrimmage, and Central answered with a 65-yard touchdown drive of its own, with Tyler Gilroy finding Evan Smith for a 5-yard score.

But the Little Green lost a fumble and turned the ball over on downs in Milford territory on two other possessions.

Both teams open the regular season at home on Friday, with Milford hosting Hollis Brookline and Central welcoming Salem.

Bishop Guertin 14, Trinity 6

The Cardinals took advantage of two misuces by the Pioneers to come out of the night's final matchup with a win.

A fumbled snap on Trinity's first play was recovered by Bishop Guertin at the Pioneers' 9-yard line, and two plays later, quarterback Hayden Moses found Joey Lupo for a 10-yard touchdown.

Trinity answered with an 11-play drive that got the Pioneers down to the Cardinals' 20, but turned the ball over on downs. Jasper Fougere scored Trinity's lone touchdown on a 4-yard run with 9:29 left in the scrimmage, but the Pioneers missed the point after to keep it 7-6 Cardinals.

After Trinity scored, Moses ran for 13 yards on consecutive plays, but left the game after the second one with what appeared to be a knee injury. The senior was walking on the sideline after coming out.

Bishop Guertin turned the ball over on downs on the drive, but after the defense held, the Cardinals blocked a punt and recovered it at Trinity's 12. Two plays later, Ben Plumley scored from 3 yards out.

Salem 7, Bedford 7

The Blue Devils and Bulldogs played a close scrimmage for the second year in a row, but this time, neither team could take advantage of opportunities at the end.

Salem started the scoring by opening with a nine-play, 90-yard drive, capped by an 11-yard touchdown run by Josh Maroun, to go up 7-0 with 7:44 left in the first quarter. Bedford answered with 14-play drive that got down to the Salem 2, but the Bulldogs turned the ball over on downs.

The Bedford defense forced a punt and Menderson Elie returned it 48 yards for a touchdown to make it 7-7 with 10:58 left in the second quarter.

Each team had two more possessions before the end of the scrimmage, but each defense forced a punt and both teams turned the ball over on downs inside midfield.

Manchester West 16, Manchester Memorial 10

The Blue Knights fell behind early, but scored twice in the second quarter to pull out a win over the Crusaders.

Memorial got on the board on its first drive, getting a field goal from William Clark to go up 3-0 with 4:53 left in the first quarter.

After West turned the ball over on downs near midfield, the Crusaders went 51 yards in eight plays, getting a big fourth-down pickup from Braden Hafernan to set up a 2-yard touchdown run by Jacob Calabro to make 10-0 with 11:35 to play.

West responded with an eight-play, 70-yard drive, scoring on a 1-yard run by Dyvon Harding and the Blue Knights got the conversion to make it 10-8 with 7:57 remaining. The Blue Knights' defense then forced a punt, and this time, West needed just four plays to find the end zone.

Brandon Lloyd's 39-yard run helped set up a 10-yard scoring jaunt by Jeremiah Kabba and another two-point conversion made 16-10. Memorial was able to drive inside the West 30, but Hafernan was hit on a pass attempt and West lineman Donovan Collins caught to put the win away for the Blue Knights.

Souhegan 13, Concord 0

Luke Manning scored twice to lead the Sabers to the shutout win over the Crimson Tide.

On Souhegan's second possession, Manning stepped in at quarterback and led a six-play, 78-yard drive, highlighted by a 32-yard run by the junior and a pass to Ryan Hauser for another 33-yards. One play later, Manning kept it for a 1-yard touchdown run.

Concord's best scoring chance of the day came midway through the second, with the Crimson Tide driving to the Souhegan 17. But a fumbled snap pushed Concord back before Souhegan's Nick Zampella intercepted a pass in the end zone.

On the Sabers' first play following the turnover, Aidan Casey ran 64 yards to help set up an 18-yard touchdown pass from Austin Jain to Manning that made it 13-0 with 3:09 remaining.

The Crimson Tide lost junior quarterback Trevor Smith to an injury midway through the scrimmage.

Goffstown 13, Timberlane 7

Zack Picard scored two touchdowns and the Grizzlies forced four turnovers - two fumble recoveries, two interceptions - in a win over the Owls.

Goffstown looked like it might come away with a shutout after blocking a Timberlane field goal attempt in the second quarter, but an inadvertent whistle led to a replay of the down. The Owls' Jared Morrison found Robert Olson for a 7-yard touchdown for Timberlane's lone score.
