NASHUA - The word the Portsmouth High School girls lacrosse team wanted to focus on going into Thursday's game against Bishop Guertin was grit.

The Clippers could have gone with another word as well: Relentless.

Portsmouth was from start to finish in a rematch of last year's Division I championship game, taking a 5-0 lead in the first seven-plus minutes and getting into running time before halftime on the way to a 20-6 win over the Cardinals at Stellos Stadium.

Morghan Ruhnke and Raegan Lawton each had seven goals to lead the Clippers (13-0, No. 1 in the MerchSquared.com/NHHSSports Coaches Poll). Lawton also had four assists and Ruhnke had one helper while Emery Lawton (one assist) and Georgia Bouvier each had two goals.

"Our word for this game was grit and that was how they played," Portsmouth coach JoJo Curro said. "They dug everything out all over the field. They really hustled to those 50-50 balls. They do everything together. They’re so connected on the field, off the field, that they just have each other’s backs."

Ginger Vinceguerra and Addie Delisle had a goal and an assist apiece.

Bishop Guertin (8-4, No. 5) got three goals from Abby Lynn and one goal apiece from Sarah Brunelle, Bella Dawson and Mariella Tomasello. Emmerson Danish came in in goal midway through the second quarter and finished with seven saves.

But the start by Portsmouth proved to be too much for Bishop Guertin to overcome.

"They came out ready to play," Bishop Guertin coach Callie Santos said of Portsmouth. "Their energy throughout the game was very high. I think we had a lot of ebbs and flows. Some kids would get energy and others would not, and I think that’s a critical piece for every team in the state. When you come in with energy, you come in with a focus on the things you’ve done all week, you’ll have success. If your energy isn’t at the same level, that makes it harder."

Delisle started the scoring just 1:41 into the game and Ruhnke and Raegan Lawton kept it going, as the Clippers scored three goals in 58 seconds to take a 3-0 and prompt a timeout from the Cardinals.

Bishop Guertin's defense was able to hold off Portsmouth for a while, but Ruhnke and Bouvier scored less than a minute apart to make it 5-0 with 4:46 remaining in the first quarter. The Cardinals won their first draw after that goal and Lynn got them on the board, but two more quick goals by the Clippers upped the lead to 7-1.

It looked like Bishop Guertin might gain some momentum when Lynn scored again and then assisted on a goal by Tomasello, making it 7-3 with 50.6 seconds left in the quarter. But Portsmouth answered with a goal by Emery Lawton with 11.4 seconds to go for an 8-3 lead.

"I think no matter what the score is, we’re going to come out there and not sit back at all," Ruhnke said. "Yes, they’ll get a couple in, but obviously, they’re a good team and that’s what is going to happen.

"We knew it would be a competitive game because they are such a great team. I think we were locked in and stayed composed throughout the whole game."

The Clippers outscored the Cardinals 5-0 in the second quarter to take a 13-3 lead, putting the game into running time with just under a minute left in the half.

It was the fifth meeting between the teams since Portsmouth moved up to D1 before the 2023 season and the Clippers have won all five, including in the playoffs each of the last two seasons.

"The girls hyped this game up," Curro said. "They knew it was a big game, and mentally, I think they were ready to be relentless out there. They have been for a while, just getting a game with good competition, they’ve been waiting for it. It’s been building. I’m not shocked they came out so hot, but the fact that they stayed with it, there was only a small lull."
