This year, Portsmouth enters the tournament as the No. 1 seed, after being the second seed the last two seasons. But despite that, in the last three years, the Clippers have only lost once to a fellow D2 team, as their six other losses over that stretch have come against D1 teams. Hollis Brookline came the closest in the division to knocking the Clippers off, as Portsmouth needed overtime to beat the Cavaliers in the regular-season finale May 23\. Winnacunnet came up a goal short in its first meeting with Portsmouth back on April 14, but when the teams met again on May 6, the Clippers won by nine. Here is a look at Wednesday's quarterfinal games. **No. 8 Goffstown (8-7) at No. 1 Portsmouth (16-2), 6 p.m.** - Portsmouth won 14-6 on the road on April 25, a day after the Clippers dropped their first game of the year to Pinkerton. The Grizzlies needed a strong second half of the season to get into the playoffs, as they went 7-2 over their final nine games after a slow start. In those seven wins, Goffstown, averaged 16.7 goals, but six of those wins came against non-playoff teams, and in the two losses, the Grizzlies allowed almost as many goals (28) as they did in the seven wins (35). Portsmouth has averaged 14.9 goals per game this year, and the Clippers have only allowed 89 goals all year. That number drops to 53 in games against D2 opponents. - **Pick:** Portsmouth 18, Goffstown 3 **No. 5 John Stark (8-6) at No. 4 Windham (9-7), 5 p.m.** - The Jaguars won the lone regular-season meeting just nine days ago, beating the Generals 14-5 in Weare. John Stark had a tough second half to the season, dropping five games in a row to almost fall out of the playoffs. During that stretch, the Generals were outscored 85-27\. Windham had a rough start to the season, opening 1-3, but went 7-4 the rest of the way. The Jaguars struggled against the top three seeds and Hanover, going 0-6 against while being outscored by 53 goals in those losses. But against the rest of the division, Windham averaged 16.2 goals per game. - **Pick:** Windham 12, John Stark 6. **No. 7 Hanover (9-7) at No. 2 Hollis Brookline (13-2), 5 p.m.** - The Marauders handed the Cavaliers their first loss of the season, winning 11-10 on May 16, but that game was at Hanover. This time, the teams will meet in Hollis, and while the Cavs are just 1-3 in their last four meetings with the Marauders, the one win came at home. Hanover dropped its final two games, including a one-goal loss to D1 Londonderry, to fall to the seventh seed for the second year in a row. The Marauders magic number seems to be 11; when they score 11 goals or more, they're 9-2; when they allow 11 goals or more, they're 3-7\. HB was two goals away from being undefeated in the regular season, as the Cavs also lost their finale against Portsmouth in overtime. The loss was the only time this year HB has been held to single digits in goals, as it averaged 15.1 goals per game. The Cavs outscored their opponents this year by 89 goals. - **Pick:** Hollis Brookline 16, Hanover 14. **No. 6 Oyster River (8-6) at No. 3 Winnacunnet (12-5), 5 p.m.** - These two teams met back on April 18, with the Warriors claiming a 16-3 win over the Bobcats. Oyster River won its final four games of the regular season to get into the postseason. When the Bobcats score a lot of goals, they win, as they averaged 16.6 goals in their eight wins. When Oyster River gives up a lot of goals, it loses, as the Bobcats were outscored 91-40 in their six losses. The Warriors hit a rough stretch midway through the season, dropping four of five games and falling to 4-5 on the season. But since then, Winnacunnet has won eight in a row, including a 12-7 win over Exeter in the regular-season finale. - **Pick:** Winnacunnet 18, Oyster River 7. ### Playoff Predicitions **Preseason** - **Playoff** **teams:** ConVal, Hanover, Hollis Brookline, John Stark, Oyster River, Porstmouth, Windham, Winnacunnet. - **Final four:** Hanover, Hollis Brookline, Portsmouth, Winnacunnet. - **Championship:** Portsmouth over Winnacunnet. **Now** We got seven out of the eight playoff teams right in D2, swapping out ConVal for Goffstown.
