Down two goals and a player with a little more than five minutes to play in the Division II championship game, it looked like the Clippers might come up short of their fourth consecutive title. But Portsmouth scored three times in the final three minutes, including the game-winner from Charlotte Marston with 1:32 remaining, to rally for an 8-7 win over Hollis Brookline and the program's eighth title since 2007 at Bedford High School. After taking a 1-0 lead in the game's opening minutes, Portsmouth (18-2) had that lead for less than two minutes and trailed by as many as three goals early in the second half before coming back twice to pull out the win. It was the only time this year the Clippers were held under 10 goals. "I don’t think we were expecting them to come out that strong," Marston said. "We ended up getting our feet underneath us. We ended up coming out with the win, but it was definitely not easy. They are a great team, they’re phenomenal. We had no idea what to expect coming into this game, we just had to fight the whole way through." Portsmouth won 12 of 16 draw controls and the teams combined for just 15 turnovers, but when HB got the ball, it was able to extend possessions and took advantage of its opportunities to stay in front of the Clippers. "I think they came out ready to fight," Portsmouth coach JoJo Curro said. "We knew they were an aggressive team and we prepared for that, but off that first draw, they wanted it. You could tell. You could feel our energy deflate a little bit. "It took a lot of heart from every single person on this team to bring that back up. We play at a fast pace, that’s the kind of game we like, and they really took long possessions and made us work for it. It’s not something we’re used to and it required a lot of patience for us." Marston finished with three goals and an assist while Sally Collins scored both of her goals in the final three minutes of the game. Mia Smith, Sadie Alati and Avery Ruhnke also scored for the Clippers and Arden Griffin made five saves. Alyssa Hill led HB with four goals and an assist while Abbey Magnuszewski had a goal and an assist and Abbie Ogren and Brooke Allanach also scored. Hallie Bardani made six saves for the Cavs, who lost to Portsmouth in the final for the second time in four years. "Ball possession, that’s been key for us the last couple of games," Allanach said. "We have a zone defense that we changed a little bit and that helped a lot. That stopped Windham, Hanover and basically this team, too. Our defense did it. I think they were very surprised. I think they came in thinking this was going to be an easy one." Hill's fourth goal of the game gave Hollis Brookline (11-5) a 7-5 lead with 9:59 to play and the Cavaliers won the ensuing draw, running more than four minutes off the clock. Portsmouth's Maggie Parker drew a yellow card with 5:35 to play, putting the Clippers down a player for two minutes, but with just under five minutes to go, HB was called for an illegal screen and turned the ball over. Things unraveled for the Cavs from there. Ellie Maxwell picked up a yellow card with 4:31 remaining, and after Bardani made a save on a free position shot from Portsmouth's Julia Roelofs, HB turned the ball over on the clear. That set up a great feed from Marston to Collins for a goal with 2:53 left that made it a 7-6 HB lead. The Clippers won the draw and Cailean Roy picked up her second yellow card with 2:47 to play, putting Portsmouth up two players for 16 seconds. Collins scored off a free position to tie the game with 2:22 to go, and after another win in the circle, Marston gave Portsmouth the lead 50 seconds later. "I think throughout the game, we had really good composure," Allanach said. "There were a couple of calls at the end that didn’t go our way and I don’t think we got everything together at the end like we thought we were." The Cavs had a 4-2 lead at halftime after Hill scored with 2.1 seconds left in the half, and the sophomore gave HB a three-goal lead with 22:53 left in the game. That goal came after Collins had drawn a yellow card, and it looked like the Cavs would have a chance for more on the advantage after winning the draw, but they were caught offsides. Roy picked up her first card moments later and Portsmouth took advantage, scoring three goals in 1:26 to tie the game at 5. But HB wasn't done. Another yellow card, this one on Alati, helped set up a goal by Magnuszewski that put the Cavs up 6-5 with 12:11 remaining. Portsmouth won the draw, but turned it over, and after Griffen made a save on a free position by Magnuszewski, Hill got the ball back and scored to give HB a two-goal lead. "I think we were showing that we were going to fight and then they fought harder," Curro said. "We had to step it up again. They came back at us and we needed to decided if we were going to win this or not and when are we going to start." It turned out the Clippers did so just in time.
