The Clippers wanted to prove that they were still the team to beat in Division II, while the Cavaliers had a great opportunity to show how far they had come since losing 16-10 in the 2018 D2 final to the Clippers. In the end, Portsmouth’s championship pedigree won out, as the Clippers rallied from a 5-3 deficit in the second half, with junior midfielder Sallie Squire netting the game-winning goal 1:07 into overtime during a 7-6 triumph. “We came out with strong intensity, which we needed to do because we knew they were going to come out with just as much intensity,” said Sallie Squire. “They wanted us badly because it was a rematch of last year’s championship. We are always excited to play them because they always put up a good fight.” The win gives Portsmouth the No. 1 seed in the tournament, which starts Wednesday, while HB will be the No. 2 seed. Sallie Squire (three goals), freshman midfielder Mia Smith (two goals) and junior attack Anna Smith (goal, assist) led the Clippers (16-2) from an offensive standpoint. Senior goalie Grace Jackson was a huge factor behind the Clippers winning this matchup, as she tracked the ball well, was confident in net, and finished with six saves. “Grace Jackson had an amazing game per usual,” said Sallie Squire. “She is the best goalie that anyone could ask for. She did a great job stepping toward the ball, tracking everyone’s sticks, and knowing where the ball was.” Senior goalie Olivia Valentine was the star of the show for HB (13-2), posting 16 saves. Offensively, the Cavaliers were led by senior attack Kelsey Sweeney (two goals, assist) and junior midfielder Tasha White (goal, assist). Portsmouth was facing a 5-3 deficit with less than seven minutes on the clock in the second half, but the Clippers stayed the course and reeled off three unanswered goals. A goal with 6:52 left by Mia Smith cut HB’s lead to 5-4, and then with 5:53 on the clock, Anna Smith buried the equalizer. Sallie Squire came through in her first of two big moments, giving Portsmouth a 6-5 lead with 5:18 showing on the scoreboard. HB showed some resolve down the stretch, as Sweeney converted an out-of-timeout, man-down goal with 22 seconds remaining to force overtime. The Clippers regrouped and won the initial draw in overtime, allowing Sallie Squire to step into the spotlight with her magic shot. “We have been working on that play a lot with nailing down those passes and making sure we are keeping the ball protected,” said Sallie Squire. The visitors jumped out to a 2-0 lead, as Mia Smith scored off a free-position attempt 2:50 into the game, and then Sallie Squire placed a perfect low shot through the goalie’s legs with 12:03 left, pushing the lead up to 2-0. The Clippers kept the Cavaliers off the board for the first 14:25, but HB scored the final three goals of the first half, taking its first lead at 3-2 on a free-position goal by Sweeney with 1:14 left. HB took its largest lead of the game at 5-3 with 10:33 left in the game, as junior midfielder Paisley Broadhurst got open in front of the net, scoring a goal off a feed by White. Portsmouth closed out the game like a seasoned playoff team, scoring four of the final five goals. “The girls dug in and found a way to get it into the back of the net,” said Clippers coach Mary Squire. “The offense started to appreciate the fact that it needed to get some touches on the ball in the 8(-meter circle) and settle down.”
