WINDHAM - Tim Hopley wants things to be tough for his Portsmouth High School girls basketball team.

After the Clippers had won their first nine games of the season by an average of 27 points, they were in need of some adversity.

Portsmouth got the test it was looking for Monday, as Windham rallied back from a 23-point deficit in the second half to make things interesting in the fourth quarter before the Clippers were able to close out a 53-40 win in Division II action.

Sadie Shore scored 10 of her 12 points in the second quarter and Corinne Lamond had 10 of her 12 points in the third quarter as Portsmouth (10-0) remained undefeated despite going more than six minutes in the fourth quarter without a point. Windham (8-3) went on a 12-0 run during that stretch to turn the Clippers 48-25 advantage into an 11-point lead with 2:27 to play, but Portsmouth was able to right the ship.

"We knew there was a run there and we said that coming out of the break between the third and the fourth quarter, and that’s what they did," Hopley said. "Part of that was us, a good part of that was them and the fact there’s not quit. The fourth quarter was good for us because we haven’t been in that situation too many times. It felt closer than that. We had to execute and do somethings down the stretch that we’re going to need to do."

Portsmouth's Corinne Lamond takes a shot as Windham's Charlotte McNeal defends.

The Clippers started settling for jump shots that weren't falling and the Jaguars took advantage at the other end, getting six points each from Kaleigh Walsh and Sarah Dempsey during the run.

"We kept the energy on defense," Windham coach Anne Haky said of how Windham was able to turn things around. "When they had their runs in the second and third quarter, we just didn’t have any energy. Keeping that energy, staying in their face, and being willing to take it to the basket."

Walsh finished with a game-high 15 points and Dempsey added 12, as the Jaguars traded baskets with Portsmouth early in the game. The teams alternated scoring through the first quarter, with Windham taking a 9-8 lead into the second.

The lead changed 10 times over the first 10 minutes of the game, but after Walsh tied it at 12 early in the second quarter, the Clippers outscored the Jaguars 15-3 over the rest of the first half to take a 27-15 lead into halftime. Shore led the way, hitting two 3-pointers, including one with 49 seconds left in the half that made it a 10-point lead for Portsmouth.

"They are players who are capable of that," Hopley said. "It was Sadie in the second quarter and Corinne in the third quarter. More of that was because we were getting stops on the defensive end. We were getting tips, we were getting deflections, we were getting runouts. We contested shots and we were rebounding defensively. When you do that and make shots at the other end, it makes you tough to deal with."

Windham hung around early in the third, getting the lead back down to eight points on two free throws by Sam Adamson, but Portsmouth went on a 12-0 run - with Lamond scoring six points - to go up 20 points in a little more than three minutes.

"They kept up the energy and we lost a little bit of energy," Haky said. "They kept hitting shots, we had silly turnovers, and that’s what we talked about at halftime. We’re dribbling off our feet or its going off our hands, things like that."

The Clippers led 46-25 going into the fourth and another basket by Lamond made it a 23-point game just 35 seconds into the final frame before Windham made things interesting.
