HOLLIS - Chad Vischer wasn’t so sure his Portsmouth High School boys lacrosse team would have won Monday’s game against Hollis Brookline had it happened a week ago.

But fresh off the first loss of the season, the Clippers were able to battle through a back-and-forth game with the Cavaliers, rallying three times in the second half for a 12-11 win in Division II action.

Zadoc White and John Franks scored 13 seconds apart in the final minutes of the game and Jamie Meade - playing in his first game this season after missing time with an injury - made a solid defensive play to end HB's final chance at tying the game.

"We had a lot more grit than we'd showed," Vischer said. "Our season started with some lopsided wins which I thought brought a false sense of security. Real excited for that win because we needed that."

Portsmouth (5-1) had won its first four games of the year by an average of 8.5 goals before losing a two-goal decision to Windham on Saturday.

But the Clippers bounced back in a big way, as Franks had five goals and three assists and White finished with three goals and two helpers. Luke Lacroce had three goals and Oscar Kozikowski made nine saves.

Will Crosby, Derek Davidson and Nick Hinchliffe each had two goals and an assist for the Cavs, while Cam Tulley also had two scores.

"We played well for parts of the game and dumb for parts of the game," HB coach Mike Soucy said. "We were shorthanded on defense, but we probably lost the game on offense and on possession time. Too many unforced errors, too many stupid plays, trying to force something that we didn't need to force. If we possessed the ball a little more, I think we win."

HB trailed by two goals twice in the first half but outscored Portsmouth 4-1 in the final four minutes of the second quarter.

Neither team could break through in the third until the Clippers tied the game 7-7 with 1:16 left in the quarter, but HB answered seven seconds later, and went up by two just 19 seconds into the fourth. Portsmouth came back to take the lead, scoring three straight goals and going up 10-9 on a goal by Franks with 5:56 to play.

But again, the Cavs answered, scoring off the faceoff 18 seconds later to tie at 10, and went back ahead on a goal by Tulley with 4:14 to play. Of HB's four goals in the second half, three came off faceoffs or in transition.

"They were very effective on their fast break and they ran it very well," Vischer said. "We didn't defensively run the break very well. We left our goalie stranded on an island. They really executed nicely and hats off to them."

The Cavs looked like they were going to go up two goals with another fast-break opportunity, but Crosby’s pass to Garrett Klausner (goal, assist), who was alone at the cage with Kozikowski, was off the mark and Portsmouth regained possession.

HB was able to get the ball back, and with less than two minutes to play, the Cavs needed to keep the ball in the box. But Tulley stepped out as he was trying to move the ball around the perimeter, and the Clippers needed just seven seconds to tie the game.

Portsmouth's Zadoc White takes a shot as Hollis Brookline's Nate Hinchliffe defends.

White cut through the middle of the HB defense and converted a pass from Cole Brams to tie the game at 11 with 1:31 to go. Matt Grondahl won the ensuing faceoff for Portsmouth and White found Franks to the left of the cage for the game-winner with 1:18 remaining.

HB won the faceoff and got a shot off, but Kozikowski made the save and the Cavs regained possession near midfield with less than 20 seconds to play. Soucy called a timeout with 10 seconds to play and set up a final play.

"We were just trying to get one of our best dodgers to drive to the cage," Soucy said. "We had a couple of picks we were going to set on each side and then have somebody sneak from behind, just to have four opportunities to get a quality shot.

"The defender (Meade) did a great job, took (Hinchliffe's) right hand away, but he's got a left hand. He could have gone down the left side, but he wanted to get to his strong hand and it just wasn't going to work. That's the way it goes sometimes. You've got to try to make a play and they made one more play than we did."

Meade kept Hinchliffe from advancing the ball, eventually knocked it away and scooped up the groundball just before the final buzzer sounded.

"Jamie Meade was a big help on defense," Vischer said. "This is his first game back. He's a captain and he does a good job down there."
