Playoff scenarios for this weekend's Division III football games

There are eight playoff spots in Division III football, and nine teams are still alive to make the postseason.

Someone is going home unhappy after this weekend.

Who will it be? Well, it won't be Campbell or Monadnock, who are in line to get the top seeds in each conference. And it won't be Newport or Somersworth, who should also end up hosting quarterfinal games next week.

And Stevens and Epping-Newmarket wrapped up playoff spots with wins last weekend, which means Bishop Brady, Kearsarge and Inter-Lakes/Moultonborough will be battling for their playoff lives. That includes a regular-season finale between those last two teams.

Here’s a look at what is at stake this week for the teams that are in contention for the postseason.

Playoffs, here they come …

Campbell (7-0, 16.0000)

  • Hosts Franklin (2-5) on Oct. 28
  • Current position: First place in the South Conference and No. 1 overall seed.
  • Wins: Raymond, Inter-Lakes/Moultonborough, Farmington-Nute, Epping-Newmarket, Bishop Brady, Somersworth, Winnisquam.
  • Campbell has locked up the South Conference title and at least the No. 2 seed. The Cougars would get the top overall seed if they win and Monadnock loses to Stevens.
  • Predicted finish: No. 2 seed.

Monadnock (7-0, 16.0000)

  • Plays at Stevens (5-2) on Oct. 27.
  • Current position: First place in the North Conference and No. 2 overall seed.
  • Wins: Newfound, Newport, Kearsarge, Inter-Lakes/Moultonborough, Fall Mountain, Mascoma Valley, Bishop Brady.
  • Monadnock has wrapped up the North Conference title and would get the No. 1 seed with a win over Stevens. A loss would mean the Huskies are the No. 2 seed.
  • Predicted finish: No. 1 seed.

Somersworth (6-1, 12.8571)

  • Hosts Bishop Brady (4-3) on Oct. 27).
  • Current position: Second place in the South Conference and No. 3 overall seed.
  • Wins: Stevens, Winnisquam, Epping-Newmarket, Raymond, Farmington-Nute, Franklin.
  • The Hilltoppers are in the postseason and will host a quarterfinal game, but will need a win over Bishop Brady to have any shot at the No. 3 seed.
  • Predicted finish: No. 3 seed.

Newport (6-1, 12.8571)

  • Hosts Newfound (2-5) on Oct. 28.
  • Current position: Second place in the North Conference and No. 4 overall seed.
  • Wins: Stevens, Kearsarge, Inter-Lakes/Moultonborough, Fall Mountain, Mascoma Valley, Winnisquam.
  • Newport will also host a quarterfinal game as either the third seed or the fourth seed.
  • Predicted finish: No. 4 seed.

Stevens (5-2, 10.2857)

  • Hosts Monadnock (7-0) on Oct. 27.
  • Current position: Third place in the North Conference and No. 5 overall seed.
  • Wins: Newfound, Mascoma Valley, Fall Mountain, Kearsarge, Inter-Lakes/Moultonborough.
  • The Cardinals are in the postseason but would need to hand Monadnock its first loss and get a loss by Somersworth or Newport to move up. Stevens will likely be on the road for the quarterfinals.
  • Predicted finish: No. 6 seed.

Epping-Newmarket (5-2, 10.0000)

  • Hosts Winnisquam (1-6) on Oct. 28.
  • Current position: Third place in the South Conference and No. 6 overall seed.
  • Wins: Franklin, Newfound, Farmington-Nute, Raymond, Bishop Brady.
  • The Blue Devils will be on the road for the quarterfinals, regardless of their result this weekend. A win, combined with a Stevens loss, would move Epping-Newmarket up to the fifth seed.
  • Predicted finish: No. 5 seed.

Work to do

Kearsarge (4-3, 7.4286)

  • Plays at Inter-Lakes/Moultonborough (3-4) on Oct. 28.
  • Current position: Fourth place in the North Conference and No. 7 overall seed.
  • Wins: Franklin, Fall Mountain, Mascoma Valley, Newfound.
  • The Cougars face a possible win-or-go-home situation this weekend with ILM. Kearsarge is in as the No. 7 seed with a win, and would still get in with a loss combined with a Bishop Brady loss to Somersworth.
  • Predicted finish: No. 7 seed.

Bishop Brady (4-3, 7.1429)

  • Plays at Somersworth (6-1) on Oct. 27.
  • Current position: Fourth place in the South Conference and No. 8 overall seed.
  • Wins: Farmington-Nute, Raymond, Winnisquam, Franklin.
  • The Giants are in with either a win over the Hilltoppers, or a loss combined with a Kearsarge win over Inter-Lakes/Moultonborough. If the Lakers win and the Giants lose, Bishop Brady is out.
  • Predicted finish: No. 8 seed.

Inter-Lakes/Moultonborough (3-4, 5.4286)

  • Hosts Kearsarge (4-3) on Oct. 28.
  • Current position: Fifth place in the North Conference and outside of the playoffs.
  • Wins: Fall Mountain, Mascoma Valley, Newfound.
  • The Lakers kept their season alive with a win over Newfound last week and need another win over Kearsarge this week. A loss eliminates Inter-Lakes/Moultonborough.
  • Predicted finish: Outside.
