Playoff roundup: Two days of interesting outcomes

The playoffs are well underway and the last two days have provided some expected outcomes and some upsets.

One championship game is already set, with the Conant High School girls basketball team looking to defend its title against Campbell in the Division III final.

Two undefeated No. 1 seeds both won in Division I and II girls basketball, while the Division I boys  hockey prelims went according to seed

Division I girls basketball

Winnacunnet, the top seed and undefeated defending champ, advanced to the quarterfinals by beating No. 16 Spaulding 57-35 on Wednesday. The Warriors will take on No. 8 Timberlane, which avenged a regular-season loss to No. 9 Nashua North 45-33.

No. 6 Alvirne also got revenge for a loss in the regular season, beating No. 11 South 53-38. The Broncos will now face No. 3 Pinkerton, which Alvirne defeated in Derry on Feb. 22.

Bishop Guertin, the seventh-seed, got a 45-36 win over No. 10 Trinity and will face No. 2 Londonderry in the quarterfinals.

No. 12 Merrimack saw its season come to an end in a 59-51 loss to No. 5 Dover. The Green Wave will play No. 4 Manchester Memorial, which escaped with a 47-46 win over No. 13 Central.

Division II girls basketball

No. 1 Souhegan (19-0) defeated No. 16 Milford for the third time this season, getting a 71-31 win over the Spartans. The Sabers move on to the quarterfinals on Friday, where they will host No. 9 Windham, which upset No. 8 Portsmouth 60-56.

No. 5 Hollis/Brookline was one of three higher seeds to lose on Tuesday, as the Cavaliers suffered a 51-43 defeat to No. 12 John Stark in the prelims. John Stark will face No. 4 Merrimack Valley in the quarterfinals.

No. 11 Bedford came up a little short of another upset against No. 6 Oyster River, falling 48-44. The Bobcats advance to take on No. 3 Kennett, which knocked off No. 14 St. Thomas.

No. 10 Hanover was the third lower seed to win in the opening round, taking out No. 7 Kearsarge. Hanover will face rival Lebanon, the second seed, which defeated No. 15 Laconia.

Division IV boys basketball

No. 9 Wilton-Lyndeborough needed a buzzer-beater from Steven Heck to knock off No. 8 Profile 49-48 in the prelims on Tuesday. The Warriors get their third crack at No. 1 Newmarket in the quarterfinals.

Division I hockey

No. 5 Bishop Guertin exploded on offense in the third period to take out No. 12 Manchester Memorial 10-3 in the prelims. The Cardinals will go on the road to face No. 4 Bishop Brady, which shut out Bishop Guertin during the regular season, in the quarterfinals.

No. 10 Nashua North's season came to an end in a 6-4 loss to No. 7 Londonderry.

Other winners included No. 6 Concord and No. 8 Exeter.
