MERRIMACK - The Merrimack High School girls field hockey team scored three times in the second half to beat Londonderry 4-1 Tuesday in the first round of the Division I playoffs.

Emily Pollard had a goal and an assist and Rebecca Jolly had two assists for the No. 6 Tomahawks (10-5), who will now face No. 3 Salem in the quarterfinals at 3:30 p.m. Friday.

Merrimack also got goals from Sami Smith, Kathleen Correia and Laura Peltak, while goalie Emily Devaney made 18 saves.

Correia put the 'Hawks on the board just four minutes into the game, and the goal stood for the rest of the first half.

"That was a good feeling, to get a goal at the beginning of the game because it sets the tempo," Merrimack coach Ann MacLean said. "I told the girls at halftime, (Londonderry) is going to come back. They want this as badly as you do."

The No. 11 Lancers controlled play to start the second half, but it was Merrimack who got the goal, this time from Pollard with 21 minutes to play. Londonderry took a timeout after the goal, and once again forced play into the Merrimack end. The Lancers had a couple of good scoring opportunities, but Devaney and the 'Hawks defense turned them away.

"They put a lot of pressure on her and there was a lot heat down there," MacLean said of Devaney. "There were a lot of people in there. She’s done a nice job, but in the second half of the season, she’s made some pretty incredible saves. I really think she’s really stepped up and feeling good about her play."

Merrimack got the next goal when Smith and Jessica Lorento got behind the Londonderry defense. Lancers goalie Mary Kate Breen came out to play the ball, but Smith made a diving attempt at a shot that beat Breen for a 3-0 lead with 15 minutes left.

Kelsey LeBland got the Lancers on the board five minutes later, but Peltak made it 4-1 when she deflected a shot by Jolly past Breen with a little more than two minutes to play.

"We did some great passing and we had some good team work," MacLean said. "I’m proud of them."
