Playoff Roundup: Sabers beat Cavs to return to D3 title game

The Souhegan High School football team withstood a strong performance from a Hollis/Brookline group making its first postseason appearance Saturday to advance to the Division III championship game for the fourth year in a row.

The Sabers will be looking for their third straight title when they host Portsmouth Nov. 20 at 1 p.m.

Souhegan quarterback Mike Luks had a big day throwing the ball, passing for 262 yards and two touchdowns as Souhegan (10-1 overall) won 39-24. H/B's Kyle Gervais also had a good day, passing for 180 yards and two touchdowns of his own. But in the end, it wasn't enough for the Cavaliers, who finish their season with a record of 5-5 overall.

In Division I, No. 1 seed Pinkerton scored with under a minute to play to knock off defending champion and fourth-seeded Salem, 21-14. The Astros will host No. 2 Nashua North in the championship game at noon on Nov. 20.

In Division II, No. 2 Winnacunnet needed overtime to defeat No. 2 Dover 30-27. The Warriors were down by as many as 14 points in the second half, only to pick up their second win of the season over the Green Wave. The loss snapped Dover's seven-game winning streak and it was the fourth loss by less than seven points. Winnacunnet will travel to face No. 1 Bishop Guertin in the championship game on Nov. 20 at 1 p.m.

Lebanon put the finishing touches on an undefeated season by beating Trinity 24-14 in the Division IV championship game Saturday.

In Division V, Kearsarge also wrapped up an undefeated year, picking up a 12-6 win over St. Thomas.

Newport was the lone road team to win Saturday, as it pounded top-seeded Gilford 35-0 to win the Division VI title.
